10 Publishers Paying for $50 to $400 for Short Stories

These markets pay $50 to about $430 for fiction, and one of the magazines pays considerably more. A few also accept other genres, like non-fiction, poetry, and graphic literature. — S. Kalekar 

Night Shift Radio: The Storyteller Series
This podcast has The Storyteller Series and they choose two stories to publish each month. One story will be chosen for the Full Cast Audiobook treatment; that author will receive $50 for audio rights and non-exclusive print rights. A second piece will be chosen for their mid-month print only piece. The author of that piece will be offered $25. They publish fiction, nonfiction, memoir – anything that reads with tension and excitement. They read work from 21st-28th during certain months.

Air and Nothingness Press: Once Upon a Twice Time
This is a fiction anthology. They want two fairy tales, mashed up in a genre of the author’s choice – they’re open to Grimdark, New Weird, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Dying Earth and genre bending/ breaking. Deadline: 28 February 2021

Vastarien

For Women in Horror Month, they are accepting writing and art from creators who are not male. They publish literary horror inspired by Ligottian and/or related themes, poetry, non-fiction, and artwork.

Ghost Orchid Press: Dark Hearts

This is a UK-based indie press and their tagline is ‘Eye-catching horror, Gothic, & dark fiction’. They are reading fiction submissions about the darker side of love. Their guidelines say, “Heartbreak. Obsession. Grief. Jealousy. Love can turn tainted, even cruel. Picture the ghost who won’t stop haunting the man who jilted her. The husband who will go to gruesome lengths to keep his wife alive. The stalker who’d rather kill her victims than face their rejection.
Dark Hearts will be an anthology of stories exploring the twisted side of love. We’re looking for stories that jump off the page. Stories that chill, shock or disturb us. Stories that move us or make us laugh… grimly.”

The Evil Cookie Publishing: Gorefest
They are looking for fiction for an open-themed horror anthology. Also, “We … prefer our horror with a heavy hitting dosage of gore and carnage.”

Augur Magazine
Augur Magazine has opened a short submission window. They want dream-touched realism, slipstream, fabulism, and literary speculative fiction, as well as rich realism, high fantasy, and science fiction. They publish fiction, poetry, and graphic literature. They also accept blog submissions, and payment for these is a contributor copy.
Deadline: 7 March 2021
Length: Up to 5,000 words for short fiction, up to five poems
Pay: CAD0.11/word for short fiction, CAD60 for poetry, CAD50/page up to CAD200 for graphic literature.

DreamForge Anvil
They publish science fiction and fantasy stories. Their guidelines say, “Positive stories demonstrating the triumph of the human spirit and the power of hope and humane values in overcoming the most daunting challenges.
We are interested in all SF and Fantasy genres, but horror is unlikely to find a home here.”

The Georgia Review
This literary magazine publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and book reviews. They have published work that is less than half a page, and more than 60 pages. There is no fee for mailed submissions.

Decoded
This is a story-a-day anthology of queer science fiction, fantasy, and horror by queer authors; they are accepting short fiction and comics, and they want work by queer authors only. The writing will be released to subscribers every day of Pride month. The deadline is unspecified.

HOAX
This magazine publishes creative writing and art. Their website says, “We accept text-based work of all forms, providing they incorporate text and are intended to be shown to readers and audiences digitally. This can mean text, image, video, audio, or something more site-specific, embedded into the page or making use of its HTML.” They ask contributors to read their background and principles before submitting. Currently, they publish one piece weekly.
