Every week, Fatima Saif spends many hours searching for magazines, websites, and blogs that pay freelance writers. The result of her research is published in our weekly newsletter, Paid Publishing Opportunities for Writers.

This week, she has found the following magazines that pay writers. She also contributed to this week’s list of seven blogs and websites that pay writers $50+.

The Writer is a magazine that gives professional and aspiring writers a “comprehensive how-to advice on the craft of writing.” They are looking for reported pieces, how-to stories, profiles and narrative essays. The length of their articles varies from 300 to 3,000 words. According to payment reports, they pay up to $0.40 per word. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
Highlights Magazine is a general interest magazine for kids ages 6 to 12. It is published monthly and has a circulation of approximately 1.2 million. They do not accept work from writers who are younger than 16. For fiction and nonfiction, they pay $175 and up. While, for verse, they pay $40 and up. To learn more, refer to this page.
Woman’s World is a magazine for women of all ages which “offers heart-warming stories, as well as tips and information about weight loss, fitness and nutrition, and relationships.” They pay $25 to $250 per story and $25 per recipe. To find out more, visit this page.
Light + Life is a monthly magazine published by the communications department of the Free Methodist Church of USA. They have a monthly circulation of about 15,000. They want articles that are consistent with the Free Methodist Church’s theology. They pay $100 for feature articles and $50 for discipleship and action articles. Relevant Magazine covers the intersection of faith, culture and life. Their readership is mostly “Christian 20 and 30somethings who are looking for purpose, depth and spiritual truth.” Our sources suggest that they pay $0.20 per word for print magazine articles. American Falconry is a quarterly published magazine that is devoted to the sport of falconry. Their articles cover the “latest techniques in training, captive breeding and dog handling.” They prefer articles over 5,000 words to be written as a series. The Big Issue is a fortnightly, independent magazine based in Australia.  They publish articles on a wide variety of topics including “arts and entertainment, street culture, lifestyle and personal profiles.” Their feature stories are of 850 to 1,800 words, columns are of 600 words and one-page pieces are of 700 to 850 words.
