The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

This is a magazine for Christian homeschoolers. Articles can be from parents of homeschooled children or those with an interest in the topic. They have set out themes and deadlines for 2018. Query first. Length: 800 words

Barrelhouse

This is a biannual print journal featuring fiction, poetry, interviews, and essays about music, art, and popular culture. Stories originally published in Barrelhouse have been featured in the Best American Nonrequired Reading, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, and the Million Writer’s Award. They also have a website with themed submissions (for December, it is Holiday 2017: Land of Misfit Lit), and they also accept book reviews, but there is no payment for these. Watch out for open periods for their print magazine.

Understorey Magazine

This is a Canadian online magazine of literary writing and visual art. Submissions are open to writers and artists who identify as women and live in Canada (or are Canadian citizens living abroad). The theme for issue 13 is Blood, due 28 February, 2018. They lean toward personal stories, whether told through fiction, creative nonfiction or poetry. They are open to traditional short story, essay and poetic forms as well as letters, prose poems, rants, anecdotes, and dialogue.
Length: Up to 1,500 words for prose, or 5 poems

Backroads Online

This is a publication for motorcyclists, and was created with the idea of giving their readers places of interest to ride to and getting the most enjoyment out of their motorcycles. Although it is geared towards the motorcycling population, it is not limited to motorcycle riders. They have several columns open to freelancers: eatery destination stories, single-day and multiple-day ride articles, travel features and reflections on motorcycling.

This is a magazine for women writers. They accept non-fiction, fiction, flash fiction and poetry and they run themed issues; check their guidelines for upcoming themes. They have a cap of 250 submissions per reading period.

All articles for this Australian website have an underlying thread – a desire to fight wrongs and right injustice, and to make the world a better place. Their editorial focus is on Federal politics, democracy, the environment, Australian identity, Indigenous issues, economics, finance, health, law and the justice system. They pay if the article gets at least 5,000 views.

This is a newspaper about antiques and collectibles. Though they have not listed their writers guidelines or pay, they apparently do pay. Their website has a digital copy of the newspaper, and they have features and news on their site, so writers can get an idea of the kind of antiques-related news and features they are looking for.
