Up to $900 for YA Short Stories about Fire and Fury

Cicada Magazine is currently calling for submissions of short stories, poetry, comics, and essays on the theme of “Fire and Fury.”

According to their website:

CICADA YA/teen lit magazine seeks fiction, poetry, comics, and essays on the theme of Fire and Fury. Anger can be an all-consuming, destructive wildfire; however, like a prairie burn that nourishes and renews the land, anger can also be an agent of positive change and healing. Show us works that burn with rage in all its forms, from smoldering resentment to blazing righteous fury. Exploitative and/or explicit works: not welcome. Works on claiming anger and owning its strength: especially encouraged!

The deadline is December 2nd, 2016.

They publish short stories up to 9,000 words, essays up to 5,000 words, and poetry of any length. They also work with artists to develop comics for their magazine.

They pay up to 10 cents a word for fiction, 25 cents a word for nonfiction, and $3 per line of poetry, with a $25 minimum.

They’re a great publication that any YA writer should be proud to be published by. Competition for publication in this magazine is fierce.

Once you submit your writing, your work goes through a series of readers. The first readers determine whether your writing is a good fit for the magazine. The work is then sent to 3 editors, and finally the editor in chief. This is a rigorous, but common, selection process. If you make it past the first round, but do not get published, take it as a sign that they may be interested in more work from you. No matter what happens, don’t be shy! But also, be sure that your writing matches their needs.
