Polygon Submission Guidelines: $500 to Write About Video Games

Polygon is a video game website focused on not just games, but “the artists who make them, the fans that love them and the culture surrounding them.” They accept queries from freelance writers for featured articles.

Their submission guidelines seem to be rather obsessed with the idea of telling a “good story.” They don’t want fictional stories. They want something that “educates and entertains. ” They go into great detail about what a “good story” means to them.

They pay 25 cents a word. Features seem to be around 2,000 word, which works out to $500 for a featured article. They may also pay for other “mixed media” assets, such as photographs or other relevant imagery.

According to their submission guidelines:

“Polygon is looking for original work, new ideas and new ways of telling stories. We are looking for features that will enhance the reader’s understanding of and appreciation for video games, the people who make them and the business of selling them. We are looking for the great stories of our generation and the people who will write them.”

They want pitches to be emailed directly to them. They should be 50 to 200 words in length.
