Opportunity to Write Essays on Toni Morrison
The Cleveland Review of Books, in collaboration with Ohio Humanities, Literary Cleveland, and the Rust Belt Humanities Lab, is looking to publish a series of essays on Toni Morrison during Ohio’s year-long celebration of the influential writer:
“We aren’t looking for essays that are ‘odes’ to Toni Morrison. Rather, we want to honor her legacy with unique critical work that incorporates or focuses on one or more elements of her life or writing. We highly encourage that pitches make bold claims and focus on niche aspects of her work, with the intention that the essays be crucial interventions that both interrupt what we believe to solidly know about Morrison and her work while also extending her significance into domains less explored. We would also encourage people with a connection to Ohio to submit, as well as those whose essay pitch includes Ohio in its matrix of ideas, while also noting that neither of these are at all required. Lastly, we encourage pitches to take formal risks, experiment with and deconstruct the idea of the traditional ‘academic paper’, and approach their writing with a real sense of play.”
They will publish one essay each month throughout the celebration, from February 2026 through February 2027. Essays should be approximately 1,500 to 2,500 words. Contributors will be paid $150. If interested, send your pitches or full submissions to pitches@clereviewofbooks.com. For more information, refer to this post.

We’re taking a broad read on the theme, so hit us with anything so long as there’s a club tie-in. (Tone-wise, we keep it lighter.)”
They’re seeking articles, listicles, and personal essays. They’re open to other formats as well, but those are the big ones they want. Pay is $75 CAD for all articles and listicles. If interested, send your pitches to hello@loremagazine.world. To learn more, refer to their post.
