CanadianThe Monitor is a bimonthly policy and current affairs magazine by CCPA (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives). They publish “feature articles, original research, book reviews, letters to the editor, and illustrations.” According to an old tweet by their senior editor, they pay $300 for short articles of 700 words, $500 for 1,300 to 1,500 words, up to $800 for feature length stories, and $150 to $800 for illustrations. IndigiNews
CanadianIndigiNews is an Indigenous news platform covering Indigenous communities in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island. They focus on relationship building, uplifting storytelling, and holding colonial institutions accountable. They welcome news, stories, features, investigations, and photo essays. According to their pitch guide, they pay $250 to $750 per story (500 to 2,000 words).
Geist
CanadianGeist is a Canadian magazine which “represents a convergence of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, art, reviews, little-known facts of interest, cartography and the legendary Geist crossword puzzle.” They aim to publish established and emerging Canadian writers. According to their pitch guide, they pay $100-300 for short nonfiction pieces (under 2000 words), and $650 for lonform essays (up to 5000 words). For comics, they pay up to $650 per page (max. of 8 pages); for fiction (up to 5000 words), they pay up to $650 and for poetry, $100 per page. Kill Your Darlings
AustralianKill Your Darlings is an Australian online magazine that is dedicated to arts and culture. They publish a wide range of content, including commentaries, essays and criticisms that run from 1500–2500 words and 1200–1500 words. They only accept fiction submissions from their members. According to their pitch guide, the minimum payment for short fiction is $1000. They have previously indicated a minimum payment of $700 for non-fiction. To learn more, refer to this page.
Self
Health and WellnessSelf covers health and wellness. They are always seeking new writers and are especially excited to work more frequently with BIPOC, LGBTQ+ writers and writers from other marginalized groups. They want stories that explore personal, community, or public health, ideally with a service element. Their main categories of focus are health, fitness, food, beauty, love, and lifestyle. According to their pitch guide, rates start at $450 for short and quick news stories, $500 for reported service stories, and $800 for features.
Sport Fishing
Outdoors / Hunting / FishingSport Fishing Magazine publishes content for enthusiasts based on ‘serious saltwater fishing around North America and beyond’. They run features between 1,800 to 2,400 words. According to their submission guidelines, they pay $750 for print features, and up to $1,500 if photos are included. They pay $200 for 1,000 words and $300 for more than 1000 words for digital features.
Gray’s Sporting Journal
Outdoors / Hunting / FishingGray’s Sporting Journal is a journal for hunters and anglers. They are always looking for features on hunting and fishing, and publish four themed issues a year. They publish Expeditions – travel pieces of hunting and fishing locations, Yarns – campfire tales that can be fact or fiction, and poetry. According to their submission guidelines, pay is $850-$1,000 for Expeditions (2,500 and 3,000 words) plus $75 per picture; $600-$1,250 for features (750 to 1,500 words; pay based on quality, not length); $600 for yarns (750 to 1,500 words); and $100 for poems (shorter than 1,000 words).
Adi Magazine
General Interest / NewsAdi Magazine is a literary magazine of global politics that is dedicated to rehumanizing policy. They publish fiction, poetry, nonfiction (essays, interviews, and reportage), and translated work alongside original illustrations. According to their guidelines, they pay $600 for essays, $250 for interviews, $150 per poem, $500 for short fiction (up to 5,000 words), and $200 for flash fiction (under 1,000 words). Hidden Compass
TravelHidden Compass is a literary travel magazine, published online. They want true stories that push "the travel genre and delve into the spirit, culture, history, ecology, perils or residents of a place. They want "all the nuanced, narrator-driven, non-listicle stories that need to be told. We want a tribe of storytellers who journey together." According to their pitch guide, they pay $550 for all stories, plus 50% of fundraising proceeds. They pay an additional $75 per photo.
Roadtrippers Magazine
TravelRoadtrippers Magazine “celebrates road culture, Americana, and the great outdoors.” They are occasionally seeking new contributors to tell stories from the North American road. They are not always open to submissions. According to their pitch guide, they typically pay $100 to $600, based on length, article type, and how much reporting is required.
RV Magazine
TravelRV Magazine offers ideas, inspiration, and information about the RV lifestyle. They publish around ten to fourteen freelance articles per month. According to their writers guidelines, payment ranges from $200 to $800, depending on the department. Visit their website here.

TravelGoing offers cheap flight deals. They regularly seek calls for pitches on a variety of travel related topics. According to their write for us page, their rates range from $250 to $600.
Clip Studio Paint
Art & DesignClip Studio Paint is a software for drawing and painting. They look for artists who can create text tutorials with explanatory images (or video tutorials) using their software, Clip Studio. They want tutorials on the following art styles: “concept art, watercolor, oil painting, matte painting, landscape, scenery, graphic design, editorial illustration.” According to their guidelines page, payment varies from $300 to $900. ScienceDistillations is a magazine by the Science History Institute. Their articles reveal the impact of science on our world, both past and present. They’re actively looking for writers who can unearth little-told history and find historical angles to contemporary topics. According to their pitch guide, they pay $1.25 per word for features and a flat fee of $750 for argued essays, columns, and profiles.
Software Testing Help (STH)
TechnologySoftware Testing Help (STH) is a software testing blog. They want topics based on the writer’s area of expertise. They have previously indicated to pay $600 per accepted blog post, and freelancers could write about topics of their own choice. Their pitch guide is no longer available. Teen Vogue
FashionTeen Vogue is an online publication that offers the latest on fashion, celebrity style, entertainment, beauty, teen issues, etc. They accept pitches for reported and op-ed pieces across the following sections: culture (covers TV, movies, music, internet culture, etc), identity (covers mental health, sexual health, body image, etc), style & beauty (highlights trends, changemakers, celebrity styles, and more), politics (covers social justice, politics, history, and education.) According to an old tweet from their news & politics editor, they generally pay $250 to $600 per piece, and according to a payment report, they paid $0.29 per word for a 1400-word story. Food & NutritionFoodism is a food print magazine published by twenty-two, a Canadian publishing house and creative agency. They pay for print-first features, which are then repurposed online, and are interested in original stories that explore Toronto’s diverse and layered food scene. They also accept travel features, which must have a unique perspective. TravelEscapism is a travel print magazine published by twenty-two, a Canadian publishing house and creative agency. They pay for print-first travel guides, which are then repurposed online. Their travel features are also included in the company's food magazine, Foodism. For those, features don’t have to have a food or beverage angle, but they do need a unique perspective. Escapism's travel guides are less about first-person experiences in longform, and more about what to see, eat and do in a given destination. Philosophy and CultureLong Now is a non-profit organization that fosters long-term thinking. Their pitch guide says, “Our work encourages imagination at the timescale of civilization — the next and last 10,000 years — a timespan we call the long now.” They want stories that explore the ‘long now’ of climate change, the rise and fall of civilizations, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, economics, architecture, and more. They accept pitches for essays (1,200 - 3,000 words), reported features (1,200 to 3,000 words), interviews (2,000 to 3,000 words), book reviews, shorter articles, fiction, and poems for Ideas, their living archive of long-term thinking. According to their pitch guide, rates begin at $600 for features and essays and range between $300 and $600 for interviews, reviews, science journalism, and news articles. They pay $100 for science fiction stories and $25 for poems.
Scout Life
Lifestyle / EntertainmentScout Life (Formerly Boys’ Life) is a monthly magazine published by the Boy Scouts of America. Articles should interest and entertain scouts aged 6-17. They cover a broad range of non-fiction, from professional sports to American history. Department pieces include nature, aviation, health, pets, history, and music. Fiction is assignment-only. Articles run 500-1,200 words for major non-fiction articles and up to 600 words for departments.
