The Sask Dispatch is a Saskatchewan-focused news publication by Briarpatch Magazine. They’re accepting pitches for their Spring 2026 issue. Broadly, they’re always seeking “pitches covering provincial and municipal elections, grassroots activism, Indigenous rights, arts and culture, economic justice, ecology, gender equity, harm reduction, and more.” They pay $100 for profiles, short essays, and reviews (less than 1,000 words); $200 for feature stories (1,000-1,500 words) and photo essays; and $300 for research-based articles and investigative reportage (1,500-2,000 words). Transitions is Looking for Pitches About the Balkans

Transitions (TOL) is “a nonprofit organization established to strengthen the professionalism, independence and impact of the news media in the post-communist countries of Europe and the former Soviet Union.” They’re looking for pitches from freelance journalists, photographers, and multimedia creators covering the Balkans:

“We’re looking for original, in-depth reporting that sheds light on key issues shaping the region today. We welcome a range of formats – from written features and video to multimedia and data-driven pieces.

We welcome pitches for:

- Reported features (1,000–1,500 words)

- Photo essays with captions or short accompanying text

- Video or multimedia pieces

- Explainers or visual stories that combine reporting with graphics, data, or maps”

Next City is a nonprofit news organization that covers urban policy, planning, transportation, and design. They’re open to pitches for solutions-oriented reporting on urban policy. They’re prioritizing reported news stories that focus on:

“- Strategies cities, local governments, nonprofits, and service providers are using to deal with federal cuts or attacks

- Transportation and mobility innovations

- Indigenous-led development initiatives”

They pay a flat rate of $400 for reported news stories.

They’re always open to op-ed submissions. At the moment, they’re “particularly interested in commentary and analysis on how local governments, service providers, nonprofits and philanthropic funders can effectively deal with federal cuts and uncertainty.” They offer a small honorarium of $100 to $200 for published op-eds (700 to 1,200 words).
