Positive News is a website and quarterly print magazine that reports on what’s going right. Their acting editor is seeking pitches for sparky solutions-focused features for their next print issue. They pay 30p per word. Read their acting editor’s Tweet here and their pitching guide here.

Wired is a magazine that covers the current and future trends in technology. Their editor for business coverage is open for pitches. International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) offers the latest tips, training opportunities, trends, and tools for professional and emerging journalists around the world. They are looking for pitches: “Do you know of a journalism tool, app or resource that we haven’t covered? A media innovator who has a fascinating story to tell? Scalawag is a Black-led, woman-run website and magazine dedicated to the American South. They are commissioning reviews about Emmy-nominated shows for their new series, pop justice (the series explores copaganda in pop culture). They want reviews about:

“-Copaganda (or lack thereof) in storylines

-The sanitization of white scammers/capitalists (Inventing Anna, The Dropout, White Lotus)

-Intersection of police state and Drag Race”

Travel + Leisure is a travel magazine. Their editor has tweeted, “I’m looking for pitches on CRAFT! for Travel + Leisure. Culturally significant techniques from anywhere in the world. Pls include: a way engage as a visitor in the place where it is practiced (tours, classes, etc.); a way to buy directly from artisans (online pref but not req).” Pay is about $2 per word. Penguin Random House is the largest trade book publisher in the world. They are seeking some new freelance writers for content marketing work. Passionfruit is the Daily Dot’s creator economy newsletter. Their editor is always looking for pitches. She is “interested in niche internet subcultures, up-and-coming creator interviews, trend analyses, creator economy news, and more.” Think pieces start at $250, interviews at $300, and reported features at $450. Apartment Therapy is a home and decor website that features DIY how-to’s, design lessons, expert advice, and shopping guides for creating beautiful homes. Their editor is seeking pitches for their news & culture vertical. The pitches should revolve around Hispanic Heritage Month, back to school, and their “upcoming themes for art month, architecture week, community month, along w/other incoming holidays.” Rates are $100 to $250+. Dirt is a newsletter about entertainment. Television (especially streaming) is their bread and butter. They love “short essays and posts that take an unexpected angle on a popular show, highlight a previously uncovered element or particular aesthetic of a show everyone is watching, or recommend things that it seems like no one is watching at all.” Beyond TV, they publish “pieces covering all kinds of cultural ephemera: movies, books, fashion and style, art, furniture and design, scene reports, shopping, video games, music, politics, and media.” Their standard rates start at $0.50 per word. Insider is a global news publication. Their media and advertising desk is accepting freelance pitches. They are keen on topical as-told-to interviews. Jacobin is a socialist print magazine (published 4 times a year). They are always seeking reviews and review-essays on new books, particularly in “history, sociology, and political science.” Payment reports indicate that they pay $0.05 to $0.13 per word. The Fence is a London-based independent quarterly magazine that ships internationally but focuses around life in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They have tweeted, “We’re looking for pitches from the world of high fashion, low culture, London’s suburbs, the English countryside, the Palace of Westminster; we want literary libel, exposés and kiss-and-tells.” They pay £150-£250 per piece (1,000-1,500 words). Cysters is a grassroots charity that is redefining reproductive and mental wellbeing for marginalized communities. They want to commission 5 minoritized individuals (e.g. POC, neurodivergent, queer, and trans) to write articles for their site. POCIT highlights the stories of POC within the sphere of tech and startups. They are seeking stories about POC in tech. FanSided is a network of fandom-focused sports, lifestyle, and entertainment websites. Their creative editorial director is seeking pitches for “stories about the intersection of sports and climate change.” The stories don’t have to be solution-oriented. Guardian Australia’s deputy culture editor has tweeted, “If you are a freelancer with ideas across arts in Australia – film, TV, music, books, visual arts, stage, games – please do pitch.” Rates are 70c/word for features, $300-$500 for reviews, and $400 for sorted columns. Maisonneuve is a Montreal-based quarterly of arts, opinion, and ideas. They are seeking pitches for reported features, essays as well as cultural reviews for their Winter 2022 issue. Minority Africa is a digital publication that reports on African minorities using data-driven multimedia journalism. Their associate editor has tweeted, “Call for pitches! Looking for some punchy op-eds about minority rights in Africa. Got a strong opinion about the impact of climate change on minorities in Africa? Volteface is a UK-based drug policy think-tank that is exploring harm reduction focused alternatives to current drug policies. They are seeking pitches for their website, “particularly news-based stories covering developments in drug policy across the world, on-the-ground stories of path-breaking initiatives, and punchy opinion pieces advocating for policy changes from angles that people may not have considered before.” They also want intersectional social justice stories plus interviews, listicles, explainers, etc. For shorter pieces (less than 1,000 words), they pay up to £100 and for long reads, they pay up to £200. Shiblaqbri Mag covers all things beauty and lifestyle. They are looking for beauty and TV/movie pitches. For beauty, they are seeking “anything from personal essays to product reviews.” They try “not to encourage spending unless necessary so keep that in mind for beauty pitches.” TV/movies is a small section of the website that they want to expand on, so “think pieces on what the final season of stranger things will be like to a recent obsession on a new movie or show is a great start!” Rates begin at $80. They are accepting pitches for their winter issue, “Bodies.” The issue will “explore the ways our bodies, in both the literal and metaphorical sense, can provide avenues for resistance, healing, community cohesion, and societal transformation.” Their “conception of the body is not limited to the physical body, but rather includes the bodies of which we are also a part: our communities, our body politic (local, national, and global), and our planet.” Their website base rate for reported articles is $0.40/word and print base rate is $0.50/word.
