Hakai Magazine is brand new and very exciting. They recently launched, and they seem to be having a great start.

Not only do they pay very well, they’re focused on publishing quality writing. Because they’re new, they are far more likely to publish new writers. And if your work meet their needs, they could become a long term source of freelance writing income. Not only that, they pay their writers well. They want quality writing, and they’re willing to pay for it They even pay $200 for republished articles. The rate was previously quoted at $1 a word, but no longer seems to be listed directly on their submission guidelines page. Be sure to query for exact rates.

“We’re Planet Ocean, not Planet Earth” is the theme of their magazine. They’re all about coastal ecosystems and coastal societies. They are based on Vancouver, BC, so keep in mind that the rates they pay are in Canadian dollars.

According to their website:

“We want skepticism, not sensationalism. (You won’t make it far in a ship held together by corrections.) That’s why we pay fairly—because good work takes time.”

Indeed, their pay rates are more than fair, especially for a new magazine.

Their submission guidelines are very thorough. They even go into detail about what less experienced writers should submit.  Because they are new, they don’t have back issues, but they do link to many other articles that give an idea of what they’re looking for.
