Details <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autostraddle.com\/submissions\/\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd <a href=\"https:\/\/roommagazine.com\/submit\/\"><strong>Room Magazine<\/strong><\/a> publishes writing by marginalized genders, including women, both cisgender\u00a0and\u00a0transgender,\u00a0transgender\u00a0men, Two-Spirit and\u00a0nonbinary\u00a0people; they are reading submissions of creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry for the <strong>Audacity<\/strong>-themed issue until 15 January 2022. They\u2019re reading on the \u2018Uncharted Territory\u2019 theme. Their guidelines say, \u201cEach person is essentially, a vast uncharted territory just waiting to be explored. Pay is $100-$400.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Forge Literary Magazine<br \/>\n<\/strong>They publish one prose piece per week, fiction or non-fiction, and are open to all genres and voices. They open on the 1st of every month and can accept a limited number of fee-free submissions \u2013 the window closes when the limit is reached, and will re-open the following month, except September.<br \/>\nDeadline: Until filled, each month except September<br \/>\nLength: Prefer up to 3,000 words; won\u2019t accept anything above 5,000 words<br \/>\nPay: $75<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/forgelitmag.com\/submit\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Puritan<\/strong><br \/>\nThis Canadian literary magazine publishes non-fiction \u2013 interviews, essays (accepts pitches), as well as fiction, reviews, and poetry. They accept a limited number of fee-free submissions every month. They\u2019re also currently looking for Editors in Residence for their blog, The Town Crier \u2013 this is a month-long virtual position and offers CAD200.<br \/>\nDeadline: 25 December 2021 for the Winter cycle (may close earlier if Submittable cap reached); reads year-round<br \/>\nLength: Up to 10,000 words for fiction, up to 4 poems; various for non-fiction (see guidelines)<br \/>\nPay: CAD200 per essay; CAD150 for fiction; CAD100 per interview or review; CAD25 per poem (or page, capped at CAD80)<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/puritan-magazine.submittable.com\/submit?subId=16549829\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(Another literary magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnatireview.com\/submission-guidelines-2021\/\"><strong>The Cincinnati Review<\/strong><\/a>, accepts literary non-fiction of up to 20 pages, as well as fiction, poetry, and poetry translations. They\u2019ll open for print magazine submissions on 1st December and will remain open until 31 December, or until the Submittable cap is reached. Pay is $25\/page for prose in the journal, $30\/page for poetry.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York Times: Modern Love; Solver Stories<br \/>\n<\/strong>They are open to unsolicited submissions of personal essays about love, and about puzzles.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8212; Modern Love:<\/strong> They accept submissions for their Modern Love column; one of their reading periods is from September to December. Modern Love publishes honest personal essays about contemporary relationships \u2013 see guidelines for further details and examples of past published essays. They especially encourage Black and Indigenous people and other people of color to submit, as well as writers outside of the United States and those who identify as members of LGBTQ communities. (They also publish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/19\/style\/modern-love-tiny-love-stories.html\"><strong>Tiny Love Stories<\/strong><\/a> of exactly 100 words, for which there is no monetary payment. Their guidelines say, \u201cSolver Stories, a feature of Wordplay, welcomes submissions of personal essays on a variety of topics, such as: An issue the writer has faced in life, and how solving puzzles (of any kind) has helped them resolve that issue; A feel-good story or good news from the worlds of puzzles and games\u2026; How solving puzzles has affected a relationship in the writer\u2019s life; How puzzles, games or use of language have been agents of cultural change.<br \/>\nThe most important thing is that the writing be emotionally honest and for the story to be freshly and compellingly told.\u201d They have examples of Solver Stories essays within the guidelines.<br \/>\nDeadline: Ongoing<br \/>\nLength: 800-1,200 words<br \/>\nPay: $200<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/29\/crosswords\/solver-stories-submission-guidelines.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ploughshares<br \/>\n<\/strong>There is a fee to submit online for non-subscribers, but postal submissions are free. They publish creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Also look at their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pshares.org\/submit\/solos\">Solos<\/a>, which accepts longer submissions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pshares.org\/submit\/look2-essay\">Look2<\/a> essays, which are about underappreciated or overlooked writers, living or dead, anywhere in the world \u2013 there\u2019s no fee to submit online for Look2 essays.<br \/>\nDeadline: 15 January 2022<br \/>\nLength: Varies<br \/>\nPay: $45\/page, up to $450<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pshares.org\/submit\/journal\/guidelines\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWest Branch<\/strong><br \/>\nThe well-regarded literary magazine from Bucknell University, <a href=\"http:\/\/westbranch.blogs.bucknell.edu\/\">West Branch<\/a>, publishes creative non-fiction, as well as fiction and poetry. Send no more than two submissions per reading period (see guidelines).<br \/>\nDeadline: 1 April 2022<br \/>\nLength: Up to 6 poems; up to 30 pages for prose<br \/>\nPay: $50\/poem; $0.05\/word for prose, up to $100<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/westbranchsubmissions.bucknell.edu\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MotherWell<\/strong><br \/>\nThey publish <a href=\"https:\/\/motherwellmag.submittable.com\/submit\/55380\/personal-essays\">personal essays<\/a> on parenting. Their guidelines say, \u201cWe are looking for evocative first-person narratives that have a unique focus, or take a novel angle, on a slice of the parenting experience. We are open to a range of styles and tones: the only requirement is that the essay works on its own terms\u2014be it lyrical, humorous, research-oriented, etc\u2014and conveys something fundamental about its writer.\u201d\u00a0They also publish themed pieces, including on Home for the Holidays, Parenting and Food, as well as perspective pieces, and more.
