Mysterion
\n<\/strong>They want science fiction, fantasy and horror stories that engage meaningfully with Christian themes, characters or cosmology. \u201cWe love science fiction and fantasy, enjoy good ghost stories, and think there’s great fiction material hidden in the mysteries of Christian theology–cherubim, leviathan, nephilim, visions, prophecy, and more\u201d, according to guidelines. The stories need not teach a moral or be close to an approved theological position. Nor do they need to be pro-Christian \u2013 see their detailed guidelines on the kind of work they see too often, and what they would like to see. They are especially interested in stories that show Christians from cultures beyond those of the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. They also accept translations and reprints, and art submissions.

Augur Magazine
\n<\/strong>Augur Magazine, a Canadian magazine of speculative fiction and poetry, wants submissions for two issues, one themed, and the other unthemed. They want dream-touched realism, slipstream, fabulism, and literary speculative fiction, as well as rich realism, high fantasy, and science fiction. The submission calls are for Issue 4.2, the Fall\/Winter issue (unthemed), and Issue 5.1, themed \u2018Joyful Imaginations<\/strong>\u2019 \u2013 \u201cFor 5.1, we\u2019re looking for pieces that invoke delight, contentment, transformation, dreaminess, & beauty\u2014especially from marginalized creators.\u201d

Welkin: A Magazine of the Fantastic
\n<\/strong>This is a new magazine. Their website<\/a> says this is \u201cis magazine of fantastic literature, a journal devoted to the obscure and the outr\u00e9, to narrowing the gap between realist literary fiction and more traditional and fantastic modes of narrative. We specifically look for submissions in the magical realist, fabulist, fairy tale, fantasy, gothic, metafictional, slipstream, fantastic, weird, surrealist, and experimental genres. We seek a movement away from plotless, quotidian tales in favor of the imaginative, the gripping, and the plot-driven.\u201d They do not specify word count, but their quarterly magazine is 80 pages, so submissions have to be shorter than that. Flash stories of up to 1,500 words, published in their online magazine \u2018The Book of Idle Tales\u2019, are unpaid. Submissions for Welkin will be considered in March, July, October, and January. Submissions for \u2018The Book of Idle Tales\u2019 will be considered year-round.

Flame Tree: Asian Ghost Stories
\n<\/strong>This call for fiction opened recently. They want \u201ctales from writers of East, South or Southeast Asian heritage to join our powerful collection of Asian Ghost Short Stories, which will contain new and classic tales reaching across borders, from India to China, Japan to Thailand, Korea to the Philippines, and down through the centuries. The new stories will complement classics by the likes of Yei Theodora Ozaki and Rabindranath Tagore, and could give us fresh takes on such ghouls as Japan’s Kappa, Vietnam’s Daughter of Hui Bi Hua, Indonesia’s Kuntilanak and Thailand’s Preta.\u201d They also accept reprints.

Constelaci\u00f3n\u00a0Magazine
\n<\/strong>This is a bilingual speculative fiction magazine, and they\u2019ll open for the theme \u2018Love Needs No Translation<\/strong>\u2019. Authors can interpret their themes creatively, and they encourage writers to twist and bend the theme, as long as they fit into a speculative fiction genre. Submissions can be in English or Spanish, and they also ask for translation rights. Fifty percent of the stories they publish in every issue are from authors from the Caribbean, Latin America, and their Diaspora. Do not submit before the start of the reading period.

Give us the supernatural or the all-too-natural; maniacs or monsters; scary stories from the sleepover or something that happened to your best friend\u2019s uncle\u2019s cousin\u2019s sister. We want stories that have an undeniable sense of setting \u2013 bring the urban to life as well as the legend. We also want you to capture the haunting quality of these \u201ctrue\u201d stories \u2013 gives us the shiver that comes from the possibility that the story could not only be true, but that it could happen in your town.\u201d

\n<\/strong>They are reading fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for their seventh issue, titled \u2018bridges & barriers<\/strong>\u2019. They also accept artwork. Their guidelines say, \u201cTell us about the vulnerability that is necessary in order to reach out to others, to share your secrets, to trust in one another. What barriers have you put up to protect yourself, and when the danger has passed, what does it take to tear them back down? Perhaps the bridge you\u2019ve traveled has been one between cultures or between tongues; maybe you\u2019ve struggled with barriers that are invisible to others but that tower insurmountably in your path. Maybe you\u2019ve had to build your own bridge to rescue yourself from fire and brimstone, or maybe somebody else built it for you and gently carried you to safety.\u201d They also publish reprints.
