Flame Tree Publishing: Strange Lands Anthology
<\/strong>This is a speculative fiction anthology. Their guidelines say, \u201cPacked with strange and distant places, from underground cities, undiscovered islands, ancient lands, hidden continents, civilizations on the moon and Mars this new book will bring together the tales of Washington Irving, H.G. Wells, Otis Kline, with Homer, Samuel Butler and a generation of modern writers for a thrilling read of speculative fiction.\u201d They also accept reprints.

\n<\/strong>They\naccept fiction, creative non-fiction, commentary, social or otherwise, and\npoetry. For the Disobedience theme their guidelines say, \u201csubTerrain has always\nprided itself on its rejection of the status quo, and in this issue we will\nfeature work that explores disobedience as progress, as chaos, or as morality.\nOr perhaps the works will be an act of disobedience themselves, in that they\nflout the so-called rules of genre.\u201d Online submissions are charged, but there\nis no fee for mailed submissions.

This definition is globally inclusive (Black anywhere in the\nworld) and also applies to mixed\/biracial and Afro-appended people regardless\nof gender identity or orientation. They will soon begin reading work for\nan unthemed issue, as well as for a Joy-themed issue. See guidelines for the\nkind of stories they will reject. They publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry,\nand film writing essays \u2013 they will also consider pieces on television, video art, viral\nvideos, Vines, or any of the other alternative forms that moving images might\ntake. For fiction and nonfiction, they also accept self-contained excerpts from\nlonger pieces.

Tales can be Earth-based or\nextraterrestrial, perhaps featuring technological or social upheavals that have\nfrightful implications for individuals or society at large; as examples, the\nongoing erosion of privacy and enduring nature of online activity, artificial\nhuman enhancement via DNA manipulation or implants, impact of emerging\ntechnologies on developing children, and so on. … Post-apocalyptic stories\nwill not be accepted. Rather, we desire fiction that occurs during periods\npreceding any total collapse, be they stable or unstable times. The horrors\nthat await us in utopian futures may be far more chilling and fascinating than\nthose endemic to dystopias, and therein lies our primary interest.\u201d

The New Southern Fugitives

We\nstrive to promote diversity, reach a broad audience, and cultivate the new\nSouthern voice of the New Millennium\u201d, according to their website<\/a>. They publish fiction (micro\/flash and short), essays,\nbook reviews, poetry, and visual art\/photography. They nominate their writers\nfor various prizes. They can only pay writers by mailed US checks, so writers\nshould keep that in mind while submitting.
