There are also some emergency grants for writers. They are either open for submissions now, or will open soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these are open to all writers from around the world, while others have specific restrictions. I have noted deadlines and restrictions, when applicable, and when the information was available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 S. Kalekar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Olive B. O\u2019Connor Fellowship in Creative Writing<br>\n<\/strong>This is for\nwriters of fiction or poetry completing their first book. It provides a stipend\nand office space. Each fellow teaches a creative writing workshop at Colgate\nUniversity each semester and gives a public reading of his or her work. It is for\nprofessional\u2014published or produced\u2014writers in acute or unexpected financial\ncrisis. The writer-in-residence will also have the\nopportunity to work in the studio where Ernest Hemingway worked on&nbsp;\u2018<em>A\nFarewell to Arms\u2019<\/em>.&nbsp;The writer is expected to serve as mentor\nfor a week-long retreat for writers at the educational center. They also have some others which\nwill open for applications later in the year \u2013 here is an announcement of the <a href=\"http:\/\/speculativeliterature.org\/2020\/01\/26\/speculative-literature-foundation-announces-changes-to-annual-grant-schedule\/\">changed\nschedule<\/a> for these grants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8212; Working Class\nWriters Grant <br>\n<\/strong>This international\nspeculative literature grant is for working class, blue-collar, poor, and\nhomeless writers who have been historically underrepresented in speculative\nfiction. C. Bose Grant for South Asian\nSpeculative Literature<br>\n<\/strong>This grant is to a South\nAsian\/South Asian Diaspora writer developing speculative fiction. It supports\nadult fiction, but work that is also accessible to older children and teens\nwill be given preference in the jury process. The donors hope that this grant\nwill help develop work that will let young people imagine different worlds and\npossibilities. The application includes a fiction writing sample. &nbsp;<br>\nValue: $1,000<br>\nDeadline: 31 March 2020<br>\nOpen for: South Asian and South Asian Diaspora writers <br>\nDetails <a href=\"http:\/\/speculativeliterature.org\/grants\/slf-ac-bose-grant\/\">here<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International\nWriters Project<br>\n<\/strong>This is a fellowship\nwith residency to provide sanctuary and support for established creative\nwriters \u2013 fiction writers, playwrights, and poets \u2013 who are persecuted in their\nhome countries or are actively prevented from pursuing free expression in their\nliterary art. &nbsp;The Fellow will be a member of a supportive community at\nBrown University, Rhode Island.&nbsp;The fellowship will be accompanied by a\nseries of lectures, readings and other events that highlight the national\nartistic and political culture of the writer and address the global issues of\nhuman rights and free expression.&nbsp;Fellows can apply themselves or be\nnominated. <br>\nValue: A\nstipend, residency, relocation funds, and health benefits; aid for Visa and\nrelocation process<br>\nDeadline: 1 March 2020<br>\nOpen for: Persecuted established creative writers<br>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/academics\/literary-arts\/international-writers-project\/how-apply\">here<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>US-Japan Creative Artists\nExchange Fellowships<br>\n<\/strong>This grant\noffers artists, including writers of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and\nplaywrights, the opportunity to work in Japan. They invite leading contemporary and traditional\nartists from the US to apply for a unique collaborative artistic fellowship\ndesigned to highlight US-Japan artistic partnerships. Applicants must be professional creative\nartists (see guidelines for details about writers\u2019 publishing requirements)\nworking in their field. Proficiency in Japanese language is not required. Their\nguidelines say, \u201cArtists should have compelling reasons for their residency in\nJapan, and they should conduct preliminary research to identify contacts\nthere.&nbsp; The Commission encourages artists to consider collaboration with\nJapanese colleagues, as appropriate for the artistic field, and artists are\nfree to interact with artists anywhere in the country.\u201d<br>\nValue: $20,000 for three months; additional $4,000 a month up to five months <br>\nDeadline: 1 March for cover sheet, and 29 March 2020 for narrative application\nand work samples<br>\nOpen for: US Citizens or permanent residents<br>\nDetails <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jusfc.gov\/creative-artists-programs\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scripps Fellowships for Environmental\nJournalism<br>\n<\/strong>Five fellowships are\nawarded each year at the University of Boulder, Colorado. This is for journalists interested in deepening and broadening\ntheir knowledge of environmental issues. Applicants must have a minimum\nof five years full-time professional journalism experience and have completed\nan undergraduate degree. Applicants may include reporters, editors, producers,\nphotojournalists, documentarians, and feature writers. Both salaried staff and\nfull-time freelancers are welcome to apply. Prior experience in covering the\nenvironment is not required. Murrow Press Fellowship<br>\n<\/strong>Applicants\nmust have covered international news as a working journalist for print,\nbroadcast, or online media widely available in the United States, and must be\nUS citizens. The Fellow spends nine months\nfull-time in residence at the Council for Foreign Relations\u2019 headquarters in\nNew York. The program enables the Fellow to engage in sustained analysis and\nwriting, expand his or her intellectual and professional horizons, and\nextensively participate in CFR\u2019s active program of meetings and events. <br>\nValue:$75,000 and a modest travel grant<br>\nDeadline: 1 March 2020<br>\nOpen for: US citizens<br>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/fellowships\/edward-r-murrow-press-fellowship\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Endowment for the Arts<br>\n<\/strong>These literature fellowships are for poetry,\nto buy creative writers time for writing. Applicants are to submit a poetry\nmanuscript of 7-10 pages and a list of their publications (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/grants-individuals\/creative-writing-fellowships\/applicant-eligibility\">eligibility guidelines<\/a>). These grants alternate between poetry and prose\neach year; several grants are made at a time.<br>\nValue: $25,000 <br>\nDeadline: 11 March 2020<br>\nOpen for: Published US poets<br>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/grants-individuals\/creative-writing-fellowships\/how-to-prepare-and-submit-an-application#step3\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hodson Trust \u2013 John Carter Brown Library Fellowship<br>\n<\/strong>This fellowship at Providence and\nChestertown supports work\nby academics, independent scholars and writers working on significant projects\nrelating to the literature, history, culture, or art of the Americas before\n1830. Candidates with a US history topic are strongly encouraged to concentrate\non the period prior to 1801. The fellowship is also open to filmmakers,\nnovelists, creative and performing artists, and others working on projects that\ndraw on this period of history. It provides poets with the uninterrupted time and space to focus\nsolely on their writing projects for a full month. The application includes a\n10-page poetry sample. Fellows work closely with\u00a0<em>Moment<\/em>\u00a0editors and selected mentors to publish their completed project in\u00a0<em>Moment<\/em>\u00a0as well as partner media outlets. The application includes writing samples \u2013 three stories from a print or digital publication, including at least one long-form story \u2013 and a brief description of the story you want to investigate and how familiar you are with the issue, among other things.<br> Value: $5,000<br> Deadline: 30 March 2020<br> Open for: Journalists aged 22-28<br> Details <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpiji.org\/apply\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hugo\nHouse Writer-in-Residence<br>\n<\/strong>This residency in Seattle is for practicing,\npublished writers of prose and writing teachers who are experienced working\nwith writers of all levels in a traditional workshop setting, and on a\none-on-one basis as a mentor.&nbsp;They should have a specific artistic project\nthey are working on during their residency (e.g., developing a manuscript for\npublication) and should have a special interest in helping writers become\nbetter writers and fostering an appreciation of the craft. The application\nincludes a writing sample of 10 pages. Recipients must be career writers with a substantial body of work in one\nof more of the following categories: 1) Book authors with at least one\ntitle published by an established traditional publisher. Authors with multiple titles are given priority; 2) Dramatists\nwhose full-length plays have been produced in mid-size or large theaters and\/or\npublished by established dramatic presses; 3) Journalists,\ncritics, essayists, short story writers, and poets with a substantial body of\nwork in periodicals with a national or broad circulation.&nbsp;Common\napplicants include: writers of any age in ill health, or supporting a dependent\nfamily member in ill health; writers facing overwhelming medical or dental\nexpenses; writers suffering financial crises unrelated to health, such as\nunexpected loss of income, temporary unemployment or underemployment, eviction\nproceedings, or similar; writers struggling after a natural disaster.
