Their guidelines say, \u201cAs human\nbeings, walking is intrinsic to our nature.&nbsp;<em>Why,&nbsp;<\/em>and\nwhere, we walk is complex and deeply connected to our values, beliefs and\ncircumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We walk to explore, slow down, seek solace, get inspired, connect\nwith nature, for increased wellbeing, for the sheer joy of moving one foot in\nfront of the other\u2014although, many who walk, don\u2019t walk with their feet touching\nthe ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We come together collectively&nbsp;to walk for our rights, to\nprotest the multitude of injustices in the world\u2014we walk when it matters.\nSometimes we walk, not because we want to, but because we don\u2019t have any other\noptions.\u201d Work for the themed issue can be emailed or mailed. They publish online monthly and in\nprint annually \u2013 flash fiction, short stories, memoir, and poetry.&nbsp;January\nis one of the months when they accept fee-free submissions. Sometimes the\nfee-free options are closed earlier than scheduled due to overwhelming response,\nso they recommend submitting early during these months. <br>\nReading period: 1-31 January 2020 (for fee-free submissions)<br>\nLength: Up to 2,500 words for fiction, up to 2,000 words for memoir, one poem<br>\nPay: $50 for web contributions, $5\/page for print<br>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/splitlipthemag.com\/submit\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Overcast <br>\n<\/strong>This is a speculative\nfiction podcast. Their guidelines say, \u201cWe are interested in\nspeculative fiction, whatever that means to you, be it Science Fiction,\nFantasy, Steampunk, Magical Realism, Slipstream, or an as-yet-unnamed genre.\n&nbsp;Anything that looks at the world and life from an unexpected angle.\u201d Roughly half the stories they publish are from\nwriters in (or connected to) the Pacific Northwest, and the rest are from\naround the world. They welcome reprints that haven\u2019t been previously produced\nin an audio format. Their guidelines say, \u201cwe like dark, intense pieces that speak\nto a deeper truth. We\u2019re not genre-specific; we just like scary, disturbing,\nunsettling, and sad. We like things we can\u2019t put down and things that make us\ngo \u201cwow\u201d when we\u2019ve finished. But our main goal here at&nbsp;<em>34 Orchard<\/em>&nbsp;is\nto publish the stuff we like to read, and you\u2019re not in our heads. So don\u2019t\nover think it. Their guidelines say, \u201cThere is no restriction on the\ngender, expression, orientation, relationship configuration, or ace\/aro\nspectrum of the characters, but the stories should focus on those topics. There\nis no restriction on genre. We are particularly keen on featuring #OwnVoices\nauthors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topics in this anthology will be particularly useful to teens\nand young adults. While your stories needn\u2019t contain characters of that age\nrange, keep in mind that we will be attempting to reach the audience who will\nbenefit most from hearing stories with which they identify. As such, we will be\nparticularly wary of tragedies, though please do not let that stop you from\nsubmitting. Their\nguidelines say, \u201cWe&#8217;re looking for short stories from across the big\nclassifications and those shadowy places between: magical realism, fantastique,\nslipstream, interstitial, Weird fiction.\u201d They like voices that are \u201cfull of\nfeeling, from literary to pulpy, with styles unique and flowing, but not too\nexperimental.\u201d They do not want extreme horror.
