Some of the themes are: elections around the world, the sun and the moon, planet positive, Bulgaria, body positivity, to raise a reader, foster families, mental health, large-scale solar, winter riding, and stories about Christmas. A few specify their deadlines but most do not, so it is best to get queries in early. Many of them accept queries\/work outside of specific themes also. Here they are, in no particular order.  <strong>\u2013 S. Kalekar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>World Nomads: <\/strong><strong>Four themes<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nis a travel insurer and adventurous lifestyle brand. They want first-person\nwriteups about experiences, and making connections with local people and\nculture. They are looking for professional travel writers who have a unique\nstory to tell about destinations. The articles will be featured in their\nExplore section,&nbsp;where they inspire their readers, so they can plan and\nexecute their own adventures. Pay\nis $0.50\/word and photos are paid separately. They do not want listicles.\nThey\u2019re looking for pitches on the following destinations: <strong>Sao Tome &amp; Principe&nbsp;<\/strong>(pitch ideas by December 16, 2019); <strong>Bulgaria&nbsp;<\/strong>(pitch\nideas by January 3, 2020); <strong>Scotland<\/strong>&nbsp;(pitch ideas by January 17, 2020); and\n<strong>Kenya<\/strong>&nbsp;(pitch\nideas by January 31, 2020). For the\ncurrent themetheir guidelines say, \u201cThis special issue of subTerrain\nwill code readers into ecstatic dream worlds that are just around the bend of\nthe collective mind. We will be searching for a new cosmological culture\namongst the Ones and Zeros of the near and distant future.\u201d &nbsp;Commentary\n(social or otherwise) and other non-fiction should be up to 4,000 words. Pay is\n$50 for poems and $0.10\/word for prose, up to $500. The deadline is 31 January\n2020. There is no fee for mailed submissions. Details <a href=\"https:\/\/subterrain.submittable.com\/submit\">here<\/a>. <br>\n<br>\n<strong>Faces Magazine: Four themes<br>\n<\/strong>Cricket Media\u2019s Faces Magazine is a world cultures and geography magazine\nfor ages 9-14. Features (700\u2013800\nwords) include in-depth non-fiction highlighting an aspect of the featured\nculture, interviews, and personal accounts; supplemental nonfiction (300\u2013600\nwords) includes subjects directly and indirectly related to the theme; fiction(up to 800 words) includes retold legends, folktales, stories, and original\nplays from around the world, etc., relating to the theme. They also publish\nactivities, puzzles, and games. They have four\nthemes coming up: <strong>The Sun and the Moon<\/strong> (query deadline January 6, 2020);\n<strong>Elections Around the World<\/strong> (query deadline February 10, 2020); <strong>Birds<\/strong>\n(query deadline March 9, 2020); and <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> (query deadline April\n13, 2020). The ideal length of non-fiction\npiece is up to 300-325 words for a one-page magazine article or up to 600-650\nwords for a two-page magazine article. Articles that are accompanied by strong\nhigh-resolution photos are far more likely to be accepted than those requiring\nillustration. They have a few upcoming themes listed, including the following,\nfor which they\u2019re accepting non-fiction submissions: Cats, Wild and Domestic\n(March 2020); Astronomy: to the Stars and Beyond (May 2020); and Horses (July\n2020). They do not\nhave writers\u2019 guidelines, but a form that freelancers can fill in to send their\nproposals to, for these sections: History, Travel, Arts, Science, and\nInnovation. According to their media kit for the print magazine, the theme for\ntheir April 2020 issue is Planet Positive; for May, it is Travel. They publish reportage, photoessays, profiles, critical discussion,\ninterviews, reviews and roundtables. They cover design, architecture, fashion, urbanism,\ngraphics and technology,&nbsp;<em>and<\/em> provide political commentary, academic analysis,\narts photography and discussion of current affairs for a design-interested\naudience.&nbsp;The deadline for pitches for their Spring 2020 issue is 24\nJanuary 2020. They receive online pitches any time. For their 20<sup>th<\/sup> issue, they want essays (2,000-5,000 words), interviews, reviews,\npoetry, and art related to the Beat Generation. They are not looking for\nfiction in this round. Pay is $50 for essays. They generally\nwork only with writers who have some experience, so writers should send\nphotocopied clips with their queries. They are mainly interested in\nstories that will appeal to a wide variety of parents. For example,\ndevelopmental service ideas for specific age groups are always welcome. In\naddition, they&#8217;re always looking for compelling human-interest stories, so\nwriters may want to check their local newspaper for ideas. They cannot pursue\nstories that have appeared in competing national publications. According to\ntheir 2020 editorial calendar, the theme for April is The Mother Earth Issue;\nfor May, it is Body Positivity; and for June, it is The Raise a Reader Issue \u2013\nthere are various sub-topics listed under each theme, and there are several\nother themes listed. They want queries by post. On occasion they will use material that is meant for a national\naudience, but their primary goal is to provide readers with a local angle that\nis pertinent to them. According to their Editorial Calendar, for\nMarch\/April 2020, the themes are: Preschools, Autism, Summer Camps, and Travel: Museums Worth the Drive; for May\/June 2020,\nthe themes are Foster Families, Mental Health, Summer Camps, Local Family Fun, and Travel: Caves. Payment is upon\npublication, and depends on assigned word count. Their content resonates with all things Alaska Business, including\nAlaska Native Corporations; Architecture &amp; Engineering; Banking &amp;\nFinance; Construction; Education &amp; Nonprofits; Energy &amp; Utilities;\nEnvironmental Services; Fisheries; Forestry &amp; Agriculture; Health &amp;\nMedicine; Insurance; Military; Mining; Oil &amp; Gas; Real Estate; Science;\nSmall Business; Telecommunications &amp; Technology; Travel &amp; Tourism;\nTransportation &amp; Shippers; and World Trade Center Alaska\u2019s international\nendeavors. They have special sections each month emphasizing a certain segment\nof the economy. In January and July each year they publish an economic outlook\nfor Alaska. About 80 percent of their features are written by freelancers.\nQueries should be for calendar items four to six months out. They also welcome\nqueries from individuals who would like to write columns in their fields of\nexpertise. It\noffers news and analyses of events in planning (including suburban, rural, and\nsmall town planning, environmental planning, neighborhood revitalization,\neconomic development, social planning, and urban design. They want queries, not\ncompleted articles<strong>. <\/strong>They publish full-length feature articles (including case studies\nand trends), short stories about newsworthy events, book reviews, news about\nAPA activities, viewpoint essays, letters, and news of projects that are in the\nworks. According to their 2020 Media Kit, for\nMarch, the themes are: <strong>The \u201cAmazoning\u201d of America: Retail disruption\nand land use, transportation, and local economies. Part of the Pace of Change\nSeries<\/strong>;and <strong>PLUS: Large-scale solar<\/strong>; and for April, the\nthemes are: <strong>McCities: How fast food has forever altered the built\nenvironment<\/strong>; and<strong> PLUS: Coding for planners<\/strong>. There are several other\nthemes listed. They generally do not pay for\narticles by practicing planners, attorneys, or university faculty members. For\nothers, fees are worked out individually; these usually range from $100 to\n$1,000 for articles, depending on length, and $50 to $300 for photographs and\ndrawings. They prefer to receive queries from\nfirst-time writers for the magazine, though they also accept manuscripts. The\nmagazine is 70 percent freelance written, and\nthey are always looking for story ideas pertaining exclusively to Standardbreds\nand harness racing. Photographs are also encouraged. Pay is $100 for\ndepartments and $500 for features. Photo rates are negotiated. According to\ntheir editorial calendar, the theme for February 2020 is <strong>Mares and Foals\nIssue<\/strong>; for March, it is <strong>Farm and Training Center<\/strong> <strong>Issue<\/strong>; for\nApril, it is <strong>Season Preview<\/strong> and for May, it is <strong>Second Careers Issue<\/strong>.\nThere are several other themes. Their writers\u2019 guidelines say they\u2019re specially looking for well-photographed stories of touring in North America (road or dirt). They plan issues 12-18 months out. According to their 2020 Editorial Calendar, the November 2020 theme is \u2018International Touring\u2019 and for December\/January, it is \u2018Winter Riding\u2019. From freelancers, they accept feature stories, which are 2,000-3,000 words, where writers share their inspiring bicycle trips with readers, and The Final Mile essays which are about a singular experience while on a bicycle trip that captures the essence of bicycle travel (not always inspiring \u2014 sometimes hilarious!).&nbsp; Submissions are being read till end-December 2019. They pay $0.25-$0.50\/word. The anecdotes should be told in the first person,\nand have a beginning, middle, and end. They have six upcoming themes:&nbsp; <br>\n&#8212; <strong>Stories\nAbout Self-care and Me Time \u2013<\/strong> They want stories about self care, which is\nnot just about physical health but includes your emotional, mental and\nspiritual wellbeing. They want stories about how you neglected your self-care\nand then how you realized its importance and so you now engage in it. The\ndeadline is 31 December 2019.<br>\n&#8212; <strong>The Magic of Cats \u2013<\/strong> They want stories about the magic of your cat or\nthe magic of a cat you know. Stories can be serious or humorous, or\nboth.&nbsp;The deadline is extended to 15 January 2020.<br>\n&#8212; <strong>The Magic of Dogs \u2013<\/strong> They want work about all the heartwarming,\ninspirational, and magical stories you have about a dog and the magic that dog\nbrings to your life or the life of your family. The deadline is extended to 15\nJanuary 2020.&nbsp;<br>\n&#8212; <strong>Stories About Christmas \u2013 <\/strong>They are collecting\nstories for their Holiday 2020 book and are looking for stories about the\nentire December holiday season, including Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Boxing\nDay, and New Year\u2019s festivities. Stories should be \u201cSanta safe\u201d. Some suggested\ntopics are: Christmas through the eyes of a child, things that went wrong,\nfunny anecdotes, holiday traditions, holiday humor, memories of the holiday\nseason, and family reunions. The deadline is 30 January 2020.<br>\n&#8212; <strong>Be You\n(Previously You Go, Girl!) \u2013<\/strong> They want work about women\u2019s voices,\naspirations, interests, and journeys; \u201cWe are looking for your true stories on how you\nare living your best life, building quality relationships, and living well even\nwhile overcoming challenges, to be the best version of YOU. Your story will\ninspire and encourage women of all ages to be unapologetically themselves!\u201d\nSome suggested topics are: career\/work \u2013 starting your own business, working\nfor yourself or climbing corporate ladders; dating\/singleness \u2013 the good, the bad,\nand the crazy; physical health \u2013 how you are bettering yourself through\nphysical activity; mental health \u2013 taking care of your mental health just as\nmuch as your body!; self-care \u2013 investing time into making yourself feel good,\nphysically and mentally; and managing finances \u2013 budgeting and investing for\nyourself!
