Many accept work outside of these themes, as well. Some magazines specify their pitch or submission deadlines, but several do not, so it is best to get the queries in early. Not all of them specify what they pay. Here they are, in no particular order. <strong>&#8211; S. These articles will be featured in their Explore section,&nbsp;where\r\nthey inspire their readers with articles about destinations and travel\r\nexperiences, so they can plan and execute their own adventures. Apart from three in-depth features (2,500-3,500\r\nwords), they have four departments that need shorter pieces: Front of Book,\r\nReal Fitness, Real Food, Feature Well, and Real Life. They begin planning\r\nissues six or seven months in advance of the publish date. The September issue\r\ntheme is \u2018Get Creative\u2019. Their guidelines say, \u201cSettling\r\nback into the schedule of fall doesn\u2019t mean your days need to be routine.\r\nInstead, find creative ways to make variety, fun, and exploration central parts\r\nof your daily life.\u2019 For October, the theme is \u2018Take the Long View: \u201cWe live in\r\nan age when short-term tactics often take precedence over more enduring\r\nstrategies. Discover the power and wisdom of a deeper, more optimistic approach\r\nto the challenges we face.\u201d See their extensive guidelines for more. The ideal article is an engaging nonfiction story (or\r\ncartoon) that is concrete, specific, and appealing to newly independent readers\r\n(grades 3\u20135), but that an adult reader might also find interesting \u2013 it should\r\ntell a good story, with an emphasis on ideas and problem-solving. They have\r\nfeature articles (400-1,200 words), photo essays (400-800 words), humor pieces\r\n(200-400 words), profiles\/interviews of scientists, inventors, engineers, and\r\nartists (200-1,000 words), theme-appropriate science experiments, and science\r\npanel cartoons (2-6 pages). <em>For February 2020,\r\ntheir guidelines say, \u201c<\/em><em>How did the ancient Mayans feed their\r\ncities? <\/em><em><br>\r\n<\/em>Possible topics: Farming Mayan style; life without wheels; calendars for\r\nplanting; taming plants; harvesting the rainforest; chocolate; numbers and\r\nwriting; how much food does it take to build a pyramid\/city; how we know what\r\nthey ate; why did their empire fade?; ancient practices still in use; what can\r\nwe learn from them?\u201d For March 2020, the theme is <strong>Little Mysteries in the Big Woods. Their guidelines say, \u201c<\/strong><em>What\r\na lovely day for a walk in the woods. But wait, what\u2019s that?!?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<br>\r\nPossible topics: Any odd thing you\u2019ve ever\r\nwondered about in the woods. Why is that tree such a funny shape? Why do trees\r\nshed leaves, and where do all the old leaves go? Why do some trees have\r\nneedles? How does sap flow up? What\u2019s that bumpy lump? What lives at the top?\r\nWhere do mushrooms come from? What makes spring happen? What if there were no\r\ntrees?\u201d&nbsp;For Feeding the Mayan Empire, the\r\nquery deadline is 15 May 2019; for Little Mysteries in the Big Woods, it is 15\r\nJune 2019. They also accept reprints. Features are about 1,200 words and department pieces,\r\n500-800 words. They want pitches, not completed articles, and will only respond\r\nto those they are interested in. Stories are assigned six to eight months before\r\nthe issue months. For October, the theme is \u2018Linville Gorge, Grand Canyon of the East\u2019; for November, it\r\nis the \u2018Smoke Issue\u2019 and for December, it is \u2018Happy Holidays\u2019. They do not\r\ncover one-time events or news stories. Fees are agreed upon at the time of\r\narticle assignment. They may\r\nor may not pay a kill fee for assigned articles that may not be used. It is for those interested in literature.\r\nThey are always looking for articles discussing the craft or business of\r\nwriting, and welcome both queries and completed articles. The editorial\r\ndeadline for the \u2018Fall Issue \u2013 Festivals and Conferences\u2019 is 11June\r\n2019. Articles should be up to 2,000 words. They also accept creative work\r\n(poems and prose), as well as reprints. They have several sections:\r\nSpin Its (how-to\/technique pieces, and articles describing spinning a specific\r\nyarn and attached to a project), Knit\/Weave\/Crochet It, Prep It (articles about\r\nwhat happens before the spinning), Guilded (about guilds, and what makes a\r\nparticular one interesting), and several others, including interviews\/focus\r\npieces on spinners, and about journeys of fiber from one place to another. They\r\naccept pitches, articles, and projects. They are currently accepting articles and\r\npitches on \u2018Supported Spindles\u2019 (see guidelines for details on the theme). Proposals\r\nof articles and projects are due on 1 June, and final submissions are due 1\r\nDecember 2019. The write-ups can be funny, tender, a piece about grief, educating\r\nothers, or other topics related to self-care, friendship, justice, and more. Writers\r\nmust submit photos of their companion or service animal, or of themselves with\r\ntheir service animal. They want completed submissions. Pay is $40 and the\r\ndeadline is 10 May 2019. According to their editorial\r\ncalendar, the theme for the issue dated end-August is \u2018Tech Disruptors\u2019 (Next\r\nBillion-Dollar Startups, Small Giants, Monetizing Fame). For the issue dated\r\nend-September, it is \u2018Most Innovative Leaders\u2019 (The Cloud 100, Top Wealth\r\nAdvisors); this issue will have a special insert \u2013 the ForbesLife Mini Mag.\r\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/contact\/#74a88c427de2\">here<\/a>\r\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/forbes-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2018-Editorial-Calendar-.pdf\">here<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div><div class='slide'>\r\n<p><strong>Earth\r\nIsland Journal: Tech and Nature<br>\r\n<\/strong>This is a magazine that anticipates\r\nenvironmental concerns before they become pressing problems. They\r\npublish articles addressing a range of environmental issues, including wildlife\r\nand lands conservation; innovations in science and technology; public policy\r\nand the politics of environmental protection; climate and energy; animal\r\nrights; public health; environmental justice and cultural survival; and\r\nenvironmentally related film, music, and books. For\r\nthe \u2018Tech and Nature\u2019 issue, their guidelines say, \u201cThe issue will\r\nexplore how technology is often the source of much of the environmental damage\r\nthat we are dealing with today, and how at the same time, it offers us the\r\nscope, or hope, of repairing that damage and perhaps even avoiding it in the\r\nfuture. It will also look into the practical and ethical limitations associated\r\nwith relying on technology to get us out of some of the environmental messes we\r\nhave created.\u201d They want to investigate the spectrum of issues related to \u201cthis\r\ncomplex relationship between technology and the natural world, including how it\r\nimpacts our own interactions and understanding of nature and our place in it.\u201d They\r\nwant on-the-ground reports, essays, artworks, reflections, and think pieces (no\r\npoetry or fiction. In-depth feature stories for the magazine are about 4,000\r\nwords. Pay is $0.25\/word for the magazine and $100 flat for the website. The\r\ndeadline for pitches for this theme is 15 May 2019. Stories will be assigned in\r\nJune, and they will need full submissions by mid-July. Our readers and writers\r\nexpress this through art, activism, contemplation and a \u201cmore-grounded,\r\ninter-connected\u201d approach to living.\u201d It does not assume a church insider\r\naudience. The submission call for this issue says, \u201cWe ground this issue\r\nin the understanding that climate change is inextricably intertwined with\r\nsystems of colonialism, exploitation, and genocide. If we are to truly move\r\ntowards a (re)generative way of living, we know that a full transformation will\r\nbe necessary. As the tides continue to rise, what will we do? Will we radically\r\nchange the way we relate to each other and the earth? Or will we drown with our\r\nhands gripping our iPhones, using our discarded water bottles to stay afloat?\u201d\r\nThe issue is divided into several parts, with specific guidelines to each: The\r\nBig Question; Resistance; In Our Own Places, In Our Own Lives; and Emotional\r\nand Spiritual Health. They want pieces on film\u2013new and old\u2013with a feminist slant or focus.\r\nThey have submission calls three times a year, all theme-based. For the current\r\ntheme their guidelines say, \u201cFor this issue we\u2019re interested in\r\nall things SICK, be it physical ailments, mental illness, the politics of\r\nhealth and care, or the social ills that threaten to poison us. We\u2019re also\r\nlooking to explore women\u2019s visions of \u201csick\u201d (as in rad\/cool) and \u201csick\u201d (as in\r\ngrotesque).\u201d They are looking for unique and unexplored angles. The deadline for 300-word pitches is 6 May, and first drafts\r\nof finished submissions are due by 10 June 2019. Articles should be 1,500-2,000\r\nwords. They pay CAD125 per article, CAD75 per\r\n750-1000 word&nbsp;<em>Who We\u2019re Watching<\/em>&nbsp;piece, and CAD50 to each\r\nroundtable participant. Details <a href=\"http:\/\/cleojournal.com\/submissions\/\">here<\/a>\r\nand <a href=\"http:\/\/cleojournal.com\/call-for-pitches-vol-7-issue-2-sick\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div><div class='slide'>\r\n<p><br>\r\n<strong>The Rumpus: ENOUGH<br>\r\n<\/strong>ENOUGH is an ongoing series that is \u201cdevoted to creating a dedicated space for work by women and non-binary\r\npeople that engages with rape culture, sexual assault, and domestic violence.\u201d\r\nThey accept personal and critical essays, poetry, comics, and hybrid work for\r\nthis feature. Their guidelines say, \u201cWe are especially interested in work that\r\nconsiders who has access to healthcare and to therapy, who has been taught to\r\nspeak up and who has been taught to be silent, and the ways in which these\r\ninequalities make vulnerable populations even more vulnerable. While we support\r\nthe #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, ENOUGH is its own series and we ask that you\r\navoid using these hashtags in your titles and essays unless you are writing a\r\npiece that centers around or investigates the campaigns themselves.\u201d Essays for\r\nthis series should be 1,000-2,500 words. The current reading period for ENOUGH is\r\nuntil 31 May 2019. They also have general essays, reviews, comics, fiction, and\r\ncolumns. Each month they set aside $300 for features and reviews, and all\r\neligible writers are able to opt in for this payment, which is shared out. Stories should have a Western New York tie-in\r\nwhenever possible. Their upcoming theme for August is \u2018Summer Fun\u2019 and for\r\nSeptember, it is \u2018Back to School\u2019 and \u2018Shape the Future \u2013 Education and\r\nCareers\u2019. Of particular interest right now is \u2018Shape\r\nThe Future\u2019 which will focus on all aspects of college choices and preparation\r\nfor both young people attending for the first time, and adults going back to\r\nschool to improve their skills or change careers. They also currently need more\r\nmaterial written by fathers, sharing their perspective and insight on parenting\r\nand everyday life in the role of a dad. Articles on making a working parent&#8217;s\r\nlife easier&nbsp;as they juggle multiple roles and responsibilities are also at\r\nthe top of their list, as are articles on any currently trending topics related\r\nto families. They\u2019re also accepting submissions\r\nfor their regular features and columns. \u2018Evergreen\u2019 articles are highly\r\ndesirable. Pay is $40-150. The ideal length is\r\n500-800 words. For their next upcoming theme the\r\nguidelines say, \u201cAfter an amazing professional learning experience, educators\r\nare left filled with excitement, but it can be tough to implement strategies\r\nand share new ideas. How do you put your professional development into practice\r\non your campus?\u201d They pay $100 for accepted blogs. Deadline for the \u2018Putting\r\nProfessional Learning into Practice\u2019 theme is 7 June 2019.
