Shenandoah
\n<\/strong>\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00adThis literary magazine, part of Washington & Lee University\u2019s English Department, publishes stories, essays, creative non-fiction, excerpts of novels in progress, poems, comics, and translations of all of the above. Their mission statement says, \u201cThe editors believe that reading through the perspective of another person, persona, or character is one of the ways we practice empathy, expand our understanding of the world, and experience new levels of awareness.\u00a0Shenandoah<\/em>\u00a0aims to showcase a wide variety of voices and perspectives in terms of gender identity, race, ethnicity, class, age, ability, nationality, regionality, sexuality, and educational background.\u201d Their current submission window is for prose and comic submissions, not poetry. The window for translation submissions never closes.

Selene Quarterly Magazine
\n<\/strong>\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00ad\u00adThis is a magazine of romance, mystery, and alternate history. Their guidelines say that they publish \u201cfiction, poetry, nonfiction, and art that dwells in the shadows.\u00a0SQM<\/em>\u00a0desires stories and poetry that are thrilling, reflective, and imaginative.\u201d For serial stories, they prefer action-packed work with pulp elements. Their spotlight short story should feature a moon or the moon; for Astraeus-Quarterly, their guidelines say, \u201cMust identify with at least one marginalized group such as race, religion, ability status, gender, and age.\u201d They also publish reviews of adult romance, mystery, or alternate history of novelette to novel length, or of other mediums like films. They welcome translations.

Their guidelines say, \u201cWe have a loose definition of genre.\u00a0F\/SF, horror, mystery, romance, your weird unclassifiable pieces\u2026 give us your best shot!<\/p>\n

Work that builds people up instead of tearing them down is always a plus. Stories that are critical in nature should punch up, not down.\u00a0We are happy to consider survivor narratives.<\/p>\n

Twine, TADS, Inform, ChoiceScript, StoryLab, custom HTML5, or any other method of telling interactive stories are welcome, so long as they run in modern browsers.<\/p>\n

We like beautiful, moving prose, but we also like pulpy fun!\u201d See guidelines for the tropes they will not accept, and what they will give bonus points for. They accept reprints. Currently, all their non-fiction is solicited.

Excalibur 2020: Tales From Beyond Tomorrow Volume 3
\n<\/strong>This anthology celebrates the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The editors are looking for speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, or horror). Their guidelines say, \u201cThe work must have a thematic connection to Japan and\/or the Olympics. This could include:<\/p>\n

Works set in cities during their Olympic years; for example \u2013 Paris 1924, Berlin 1936, the first Tokyo Olympics in 1964, Barcelona 1992, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and so on (We are also willing to accept non-fiction memoirs of Olympic years, depending on the circumstances).<\/p>\n

Works of fiction with a theme and setting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics specifically.<\/p>\n

Works mainly based on aspects of Japanese society and culture with a tangential connection to the Olympics.\u201d For writers who have an idea for a story connected to Japan or the Olympics that doesn\u2019t fit any of the points above, the editors are willing to discuss the story over email. They also accept reprints.
