Interviews and reviews are unpaid. They have fee-free submissions for a few months in a year, including December. They want mainstream, literary or experimental writing, but no genre fiction.<br \/>\nDeadline: 31 December (for fee-free submissions)<br \/>\nLength: Under 1,000 words for flash, 1,000-2,500 words for short fiction, up to 2,000 words for memoir, or one poem<br \/>\nPay: $50 for web contributions, $5\/page for print<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"http:\/\/www.splitlipmagazine.com\/submit\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><strong>Inklings Press: Fantasy anthology<br \/>\n<\/strong>They want story submissions for a fantasy anthology. Material should be PG-13. Their guidelines say, \u201cWe&#8217;re leaning towards fantasy in terms of myth and magic, swords and sorcery, but not wanting to define it too tightly \u2013 not least because we are encouraging submissions from different cultural backgrounds and don&#8217;t want a label to discourage that. The guidelines say, \u201cThat could be the absence of light, the presence of evil, or the sinister thoughts of the afflicted. While elements of other genres can be present, this is primarily a horror anthology. They also consider reprints.<br \/>\nDeadline: 31 December 2018<br \/>\nLength: Up to 5,000 words<br \/>\nPay: $0.02\/word<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehorrorqueen.com\/submissions\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><strong>Third Flatiron: Hidden Histories<br \/>\n<\/strong>This speculative fiction publisher wants stories on the theme of Hidden Histories for their next anthology. Their guidelines say, \u201cA secret history (or shadow history) is a\u00a0revisionist interpretation of either fictional or real history which\u00a0is claimed to have been deliberately suppressed, forgotten, or ignored\u00a0by established scholars. Your tale can be based in the real world,\u00a0past, present, or future, as long as it has a speculative fiction\u00a0element. We&#8217;re not exactly looking for alternate history, but there\u00a0can be a fork in the road timewise.\u201d See guidelines for details of the aesthetic. Flash humor (up to 1,000 words) can be on any theme.<br \/>\nReading period: 1-31 January 2019<br \/>\nLength: 1,500-3,000 words (query for longer)<br \/>\nPay: $0.06\/word<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thirdflatiron.com\/liveSite\/pages\/submissions\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><strong>The First Line<br \/>\n<\/strong>For this journal, they want a short story or poem beginning with a pre-set first line. To celebrate 20 years of the journal, they are inviting writers to select any one of the first lines from their previous journals (Volume 1, Issue 1 to Volume 5, Issue 4) \u2013 see guidelines. Often aiming for a balance of nature and technology, and always inclusive and diverse, solarpunk stories show the ways we have adapted to climate change, or the ways we overcome it.\u201d They want solarpunk stories that take place in winter \u2013 stories should be planet-based (Earth or other), and optimistic.<br \/>\nReading period: 1 January \u2013 1 March, 2019<br \/>\nLength: Up to 8,000 words<br \/>\nPay: $0.01\/word<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweaverpress.com\/submit-anthologies.html\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><strong>The Worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Volume V<br \/>\n<\/strong>The editor wants any variation on the theme.
