Mischief Corner Books
\n<\/strong>They are reading stories for their \u2018Escape from the Holidays\u2019 submission call. Their guidelines say, \u201cThe end of year holidays can get overwhelming for anyone. …\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s just easier to escape from it all, running away from the responsibilities and expectations, or ignore the underlying disappointment from relatives who don\u2019t see eye-to-eye with you.<\/p>\n

Because escaping the holiday grind can lead to new, unexpected paths, and breathe new life into one that\u2019s been stuck in a rut. … Sometimes, taking a chance on the unknown leads to what you really want.\u201d They welcome all genres except erotica. Stories that are queer-positive with diverse characters will be prioritized.

Nightscape Press
\n<\/strong>They want short stories for their \u2018Ashes and Entropy\u2019 anthology \u2013 gritty cosmic horror and noir (or neo-noir) stories with a strong emotional core. The content guidelines are open for interpretation. The guidelines say that great writing, \u201coriginality, and pushing these genres to new heights will get you to the top of the slush pile faster than anything else.\u201d They only want work from underrepresented writers (see guidelines). There is space for only a couple of stories for this open call, so it will likely be extremely competitive. They are also open for their new novel charity line submissions during September for all writers of horror, weird fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and young adult, where writers, a charity of their choice, and the publisher each get a royalty split.

The Bare Life Review
\n<\/strong>They have recently opened submissions for their second issue. The magazine publishes work by immigrant and refugee authors \u2013 from foreign-born authors living in the US, and writers living abroad who currently hold refugee and\/or asylum-seeker status. They accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry \u2013 the work may, but need not, deal explicitly with issues of immigration, exile, or refuge. They welcome translations. American-born translators may submit work by eligible writers, but in such cases payment must be issued to the author.

Magic, history, fantasy, steampunk and science fiction are all welcome.\u201d They want gritty pieces that challenge the system, stories that resist and rebel, and also books that comfort and inspire. They are interested in work from marginalized voices, and also welcome stories from non-marginalized writers.

\n<\/strong>They want horror stories for their podcast, written from a first-person perspective. Stories should provide good audio cues and make good use of dialogue. They do not want narratives that solely rely on graphic gore or sexual violence; thoughtful is the most effective. They also accept script formats written as an audio drama starring two or more characters, with more being preferred. Dramas should ideally last 20-40 minutes.
