Dieselpunk and decopunk are alternative history reimaginings of the WWI and WW2 eras. The editor wants these elements mixed in with fairy tales, for example, a trench warfare version of The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes, or Hansel and Gretel as Bonnie and Clyde. Original fairy tales are welcome, as are retellings. They celebrate the achievement of women, and are particularly interested in discovering and publishing fiction by emerging older writers, both female and male. They especially like workplace stories, travel stories (but not travelogues), insightful stories about friendships and family, and stories that highlight the political side of the personal.\u00a0They accept queries as well as submissions.<br \/>\nDeadline: Rolling<br \/>\nLength: 500-10,000 words<br \/>\nPay: CAD75<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"http:\/\/agnesandtrue.com\/submission-guidelines\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prairie Fire<br \/>\n<\/strong>This is one of Canada\u2019s oldest literary magazines. They accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They also put out themed submission calls occasionally, and do accept work from outside of Canada. General submissions need to be mailed. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nDeadline: Rolling<br \/>\nLength: Up to 10,000 words for fiction and creative non-fiction; up to 6 poems<br \/>\nPay: CAD0.10\/word, capped at CAD250, CAD40\/poem<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prairiefire.ca\/submit\/submission-guidelines\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prairiefire.ca\/submit\/contributors-rates\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funny Times<br \/>\n<\/strong>They want short stories that are funny, and poke fun at \u201cpolitics, news, relationships, food, technology, pets, work, death, environmental issues, business, religion (yes, even religion) and the human condition in general.\u201d They also publish cartoons, and accept mailed submissions only.<br \/>\nDeadline: Rolling<br \/>\nLength: 500-700 words<br \/>\nPay: $60<br \/>\nDetails <a href=\"https:\/\/funnytimes.com\/about\/submissions\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local Hero Press: JCU Omnibus, Volume 3+<br \/>\n<\/strong>They want short stories set in their existing superhero universe \u2013 the Just Cause Universe stories by Ian Thomas Healy. Writers can create their own characters or use existing ones, but they must in some way tie in with the existing universe. They ask writers to submit one page of their story initially, with a paragraph description of the entire tale. When they have enough stories for Volume 3, they will begin accepting work for Volume 4. Writers can also submit a novel set in this universe.
