This is for undergraduates. Literary narratives, literary and other textual analyses, reports, profiles, evaluations, arguments, memoirs, proposals, mixed-genre pieces, are all accepted \u2013 writing for an undergraduate writing class, of 1,000-3,000 words. Entries require nomination by an instructor (one nomination per instructor).

Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award<\/strong><\/div>\n
This grant is for unpublished or emerging writers of color in crime fiction. Writers can submit an unpublished work of crime fiction (for an adult audience, rather than children or YA) of 2,500-5,000 words.

American-Scandinavian Foundation\u2019s Translation Awards<\/strong><\/div>\n
There are two awards \u2013 the Leif and Inger Sj\u00f6berg\u00a0Award, for those whose translations from a Nordic language have not been previously published, and the Nadia Christensen Prize. These are for English translations of poetry, fiction, drama and literary prose originally written by a Nordic author born after 1900. Submit 50 pages of prose or 25 pages of poetry.

This is for an emerging writer who is a US citizen aged 39 years or younger. The award includes a residency at Bard College, New York, and a cash prize. Candidates should write a cover letter explaining the project they plan to work on while at Bard and submit a CV, along with three copies of the published book they feel best represents their work. There are no formal teaching duties attached to the residency.<\/p>\n

Goi Peace Foundation\u2019s International Essay Contest<\/strong><\/div>\n
This essay is for people aged up to 25 years, in two categories \u2013 children and youth. The theme is The Change I Want to Make. Entries can be in English, French, Spanish or German (up to 700 words), or Japanese (up to 1,600 characters). This is an activity of the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.

Poems for this contest can be rhyming or non-rhyming, though they say that non-rhyming works better. They suggest, \u201cwrite about real emotions and feelings and that you have some special person or occasion in mind as you write.\u201d\u00a0 There is no limit to the number of entries.<\/p>\n

This is for US-based writers and there are no genre restrictions. Their website says, the \u201cFellowships will commission six writers \u2013 emerging or established \u2013 to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate.\u201d Emphasis will be placed on proposed projects that show strong promise for publication. See guidelines for specific deliverables, including submitting the project for publication by May 2019. Currently and formerly incarcerated writers are highly encouraged to apply.

Owl Canyon Press Short Story Hackathon<\/strong><\/div>\n
This is a 50-paragraph fiction contest where the first and last paragraphs of the story are provided (see guidelines); authors have to fill in 48 paragraphs in the middle. Each paragraph needs to be at least 40 words and there is no maximum word count. There should be no dialogue quotes, just narrative and action.

Penguin Random House WriteNow workshops and mentoring program<\/strong><\/p>\n

These are free workshops on fiction \u2013 including verse novels, nonfiction, and children\u2019s writing by Penguin Random House for new, underrepresented or marginalised UK writers (see guidelines). Application for fiction includes an initial work sample of up to 1,000 \u00a0words (additional 5,000 words, to be sent for individual mentorship later, if selected) and synopsis. There are a limited number of travel grants available to get to the workshops, which will be held in London, Liverpool and Nottingham. The publishing house will also cover travel and accommodation costs where needed for mentoring in London. They also have workshops for underrepresented illustrators; applicants may apply as writers, or illustrators, or both.<\/p>\n
