These are grants, fellowships and residencies for writers, poets, playwrights and translators. The funds are meant for writers to attend workshops, buy equipment, or to buy time from their schedules. Some offer stay in tranquil surroundings or vibrant university surroundings so writers can focus on their manuscripts. All of them pay writers, from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

There are also several upcoming deadlines for journalists: The Fund for Investigative Journalism<\/a> (5 February, $10,000); Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award<\/a> (20 February, $12,500); Knight Science Journalism Fellowship<\/a> at MIT (28 February, $70,000+); Scripps Fellowships<\/a> for environmental journalism (1 March, $56,000); and the Edward R. Regional Arts & Culture Council<\/strong>
\nRACC\u2019s Project Grant Program provides financial support to individual artists, including literary, in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas Counties, for project based arts programming. Grants are available in three categories: Artistic Focus, Arts Equity & Access, and Arts Services.

Charles Perkin Centre Writer in Residence<\/strong>
\nThis residency is for an Australian writer working in a creative genre (including fiction, poetry, performance, creative nonfiction, digital media, screen) who has published a major work, or has had it performed\/produced professionally within the past five years. The writer should commence a new work on a topic or topics that are inspired by and help communicate and interpret issues related to the work of the Centre, which is to ease the burden of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease and their related conditions. Examples might include issues related to health, well-being, food, ageing, social disadvantage or cultural identity. Applications from people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged.

Luminarts Creative Writing Fellowship<\/strong>

NYC Emerging Writers Fellowship<\/strong>
\nThis is for current residents of one of the five boroughs, and Fellows must remain in New York City for the entire year of the fellowship. This program supports emerging writers whose work shows promise of excellence. Applicants can be of any age, but must be in the early stages of their careers as fiction writers; someone who has not yet had a novel or short story collection published by either a major or independent publisher and who is also not currently under contract to a publisher for a work of fiction. Students are ineligible to apply. Nine fellowships will be awarded in 2018.

International Writers Project<\/strong>
\nThis is a one-year fellowship with residency to provide sanctuary and support for established creative writers – fiction writers, playwrights, and poets – who are persecuted in their home countries or are actively prevented from pursuing free expression in their literary art. The Fellow will be a member of a supportive community at Brown University, Rhode Island. The fellowship will be accompanied by a series of lectures, readings and other events that highlight the national artistic and political culture of the writer and address the global issues of human rights and free expression. Fellows can apply themselves or be nominated.<\/p>\n

Inaugural Reedsy Creative Writing Scholarship<\/strong>
\nThis is a biannual award for writers and novelists in further education, for the next generation of fiction authors. It is a scholarship for a student whose writing displays a clear and unique voice with the potential to thrive in the competitive literary landscape. Students must be enrolled at a college, university or graduate program in the US, Canada or Australia.

Berton House Writer-in-Residence<\/strong>
\nThis is for published Canadian writers (of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young readers, playwriting). Four writers will be selected to live and work in Dawson City, Yukon, in the childhood home of noted Canadian author Pierre Berton. Residents will receive an honorarium. Housing and travel costs are covered. Special access requirements will not affect a writer\u2019s application or chances of being selected.

Speculative Literature Foundation\u2019s Working Class\/Impoverished Writers Grant<\/strong>
\nThis is a grant for writers of speculative literature who come from a working class, blue-collar, poor or homeless backgrounds (see guidelines). The writing sample may be of unpublished or published writing. This grant may be received anonymously or pseudonymously.

Creative Capital Grants<\/strong>
\nCreative Capital is an impact-driven arts organization that supports adventurous artists across the country through various means, including funding. For this cycle, they are inviting applications for 34 disciplines, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, playwriting and performance art. Most projects they fund have a 3-5 year lifetime. Applicants must have professional experience of at least 5 years.
\nValue: Initial support level is $10,000 each; including follow-up monetary support, a project can get as much as $50,000 in the life cycle of the award

Mystery Writers of America: Helen McCloy Scholarship<\/strong>
\nThis is intended for serious aspiring mystery writers who wish to improve their writing skills \u2014 in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting. Applicants should not have received monetary compensation for novels, short stories, non-fiction, screenplays or play scripts in the crime-writing genre. The scholarship shall be used to offset tuition and fees for writing workshops, writing seminars, or university\/college-level writing programs taking place in the U.S. in summer, fall or winter of 2018 or early spring 2019. Applicants must select a specific writing class\/workshop\/seminar to which scholarship funds would be applied. <\/strong>

The Madeleine P. Plonsker Emerging Writers Residency Prize<\/strong>
\nThis is for an emerging fiction writer under forty years old with no major book publication, to spend time at the Lake Forest College. There are no formal teaching duties. Time is to be spent completing a manuscript, participating in a literary festival, and offering a series of public presentations.

Leeway Foundation Grants<\/strong>
\nThe Art and Change Grants and the Leeway Transformation Awards fund women and trans artists and cultural producers living in Greater Philadelphia (Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties), who engage in art and social change work and have financial need. This includes literary artists, including media and spoken word artists. The Art and Change Grant provides project-based grants to fund art for social change projects. The Transformation Award provides unrestricted annual awards for those who create art for social change and have done so for the past five years or more, demonstrating a long-term commitment to social change work. The Kentucky Foundation for Women grants<\/strong>
\nThe Art Meets Activism (AMA) grant supports feminist artists and organizations in Kentucky to engage individuals and communities in artmaking that directly advances positive social change. For 2018, they also have a special Girls of Color Voice and Vision<\/a> grant ($1,000-7,500) for artists engaging girls of color, aged 11-18, in arts-based activities, and working to highlight their stories. National Endowment for the Arts<\/strong>
\nThe NEA offers grants to several creative writers each year to buy time for writing, with poetry and prose grants accepted in alternate years. Hodson Trust \u2013 John Carter Brown Library Fellowship<\/strong>
\nThis fellowship at Providence and Chestertown supports work by academics, independent scholars and writers working on significant projects relating to the literature, history, culture, or art of the Americas before 1830. Candidates with a U.S. history topic are strongly encouraged to concentrate on the period prior to 1801. The fellowship is also open to novelists, creative and performing artists, and others working on projects that draw on this period of history. Candidates are encouraged to consult the John Carter Brown Library\u2019s collections online prior to submitting an application.

\nThe goal of the fellowship is to afford two writers the time and solitude to help finish a book that is already in progress. There are two fellowships, one for writers who are immigrants in the US, either documented or undocumented, and another is for an Indigenous writer with significant ties to Montana. The prize includes stay at Writer\u2019s Block in downtown Las Vegas.

Hugo House Writer-in-Residence<\/strong>
\nThis residency in Seattle is for practicing, published writers of prose as well as writing teachers who are experienced working with writers of all levels in a traditional workshop setting, and on a one-on-one basis as a mentor. Writers should have a specific artistic project they are working on during their residency (e.g., developing a manuscript for publication) and should have a special interest in helping writers become better writers and fostering an appreciation of the craft. The writer will hold weekly office hours where they mentor Hugo House community members. If applicants do not meet some of the eligibility requirements, but have demonstrated success in other categories, their panel will weigh the components of the application accordingly.

\nThis residency is meant to support literary production and to offer a working and living space for writers at Can Serrat at El Bruc, at the foot of Montserrat in Spain, to allow them time to work on a project. While the writing sample requirement is in English, during the residency course, there is no language restriction. Travel to the venue is not covered in the funding and there is no monetary grant.
