Yes, that means they&#8217;re a rather competitive market.<\/p>\n<p>According to their submission guidelines, they are particularly interested in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Fiction from or about diverse perspectives and traditionally under-represented groups, settings, and cultures, written from a non-exoticizing and well-researched position.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Unusual yet readable styles and inventive structures and narratives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Stories that address political issues in complex and nuanced ways, resisting oversimplification.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Hypertext fiction. If you have a work of hyperfiction you think might be a good fit for Strange Horizons, please query us to discuss how to submit it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They pay 8 cents a word, up to 10,000 words, though they prefer stories under 5,000 words. That means they pay up to $800.<\/p>\n<p>They try to respond within a few weeks. If they are taking longer than 40 days, they request that you query them immediately.
