<\/strong>These magazines and anthologies pay up to about $480 for short fiction and one pays more for longer works. They are open now, or will soon open for submissions. A few calls are themed. Some of these magazines also accept other genres, like non-fiction and poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Translunar Travelers Lounge
<\/strong>They want fun speculative fiction; stories must have elements of science fiction or fantasy. \u201cA fun story, at its core, is one that works on the premise that things aren\u2019t all bad; that ultimately, good wins out. This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that your story has to be silly or lighthearted (though it certainly can<\/em>\u00a0be). Joy can be made all the more powerful when juxtaposed against tragedy. In the end, though, there should be hope, and we want stories that are truly fun for as many different kinds of people as possible.
Swashbuckling adventure, deadly intrigue, and gleeful romance are some of the most obvious examples of what we\u2019re looking for, but we won\u2019t say no to more subtle or complicated topics, as long as they fit under the wider \u201cfun\u201d umbrella.\u201d The first week of submissions (15th<\/sup> to 21st<\/sup> September) is reserved for writers of color only. Submission is via their Moksha portal.

— Nomadic Delirium Press<\/strong>\u2019s Delicious Doubles<\/strong> series; they want science fiction<\/strong> stories on the Pirates<\/strong> theme. They will be selecting two stories for this publication. They want stories \u201cthat have pirates as their main characters. Your stories can be set on a future Earth, or they can be set anywhere in the universe, but pirates have to be central to your story. We are most interested in a good story with believable characters. Good writing is what will give you one of the two spots that are available in this Double.\u201d Stories have to be at least 5,000 words. They pay at least $50 \u2013 see guidelines. — Thinking Ink Press<\/strong>\u2019s The Neurodiversiverse \u2013 Bridging Worlds<\/strong>; this is a speculative fiction, poetry, and art anthology; they want \u201cSpeculative fiction about neurodivergent people building bridges between alien worlds\u2014for whatever that means to you\u201d. They have detailed guidelines, and want \u201cstories, poetry, and art with a range of neurodivergent perspectives on building bridges between worlds that are alien to each other. Flame Tree Fiction Anthology<\/strong>
Flame Tree wants fiction submissions for a new anthology in their Beyond & Within series. \u201cThe anthology of supernatural and speculative fiction is titled Knock on Wood: Tales of Superstition<\/em><\/strong> \u2026 From knocking on wood for luck to not walking under ladders, and from black cats and broken mirrors to the number 13 \u2013 people are fascinated by superstitions. This anthology will explore not only the well-known ones but also the little-known and various traditions globally connected with this phenomenon. Straddling genres like fantasy and horror, even SF, the scope for stories is massive, and each author will bring something very different to the table. Perhaps even something very personal?\u201d They do not want reprints for this anthology.

SmokeLong Quarterly<\/strong>
They publish flash fiction, non-fiction, and hybrid works (between fiction and non-fiction), and have limited fee-free reading periods. \u201cThe SmokeLong aesthetic remains an ever-changing set of principles, but it most likely has to do with these kinds of things:                         <\/p>\n\n\n\n

* language that surprises and excites,                      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

* narratives that strive toward something other than a final punch line or twist,                      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

* pieces that are emotionally resonant,                      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutter<\/strong>

<\/strong>They will soon open a brief submission window for fiction. \u201cAdventitious<\/em>hopes to be an intelligently mischievous literary magazine for the curious and unclassifiable. \u2026 We love speculative, surreal, and literary fiction. We admire its reach, its weirdness, and its refusal to color inside any lines. <\/strong>\u201cBelmont Story Review is a national magazine of literary arts, faith and culture.\u201d They want submissions on the Hope<\/strong> theme. This US-based print magazine accepts fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Please note, they can only pay by check, and you must provide a W-9 Form to be paid. \u201cFor those who cannot receive U.S. checks (i.e. outside of the U.S. or Canada), we can pay in kind with additional copies of the magazine. Sun Thief Press publishes literary translation manuscripts, while their biannual literary journal is currently open for short fiction, translations, critical essays, and poetry. \u201cWe are interested in work that blurs boundaries between self and other, mind and world, writer and text. We value well-crafted*, difficult* (see guidelines) work that interrogates and grapples with its own form and process, that deals in the experience of writing\/living\/being, along horizons, borders, between contraries, gulfs.\u201d You can download the submission guidelines for the press and journal from their website; submission is via Google forms.

Plott Hound<\/strong> 
This is a magazine of speculative fiction and poetry starring animals, and they will open for submissions for a brief period next month. Regarding the kind of stories they want: \u201cStories with anthropomorphized animals as viewpoint characters and protagonists
-Animal-centric speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, horror)
-Underrepresented voices (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, neurodivergent) that engage with animal myths, tales, and futures
-Stories with uncommonly written about animals as protagonists
-Stories that dig deep into the senses and experience of animals
-Stories that explore the cultures and societies of<\/em> animals, not just cultures and societies with<\/em> animals.
