Ninth Letter<\/strong>
Ninth Letter is published semi-annually in print at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. \u201cWe are interested in prose and poetry that experiment with form, narrative, and nontraditional subject matter, as well as more traditional literary work.\u201d They charge a submission fee, but accept fee-free submissions of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry for the print edition from 1st<\/sup> December to 31st<\/sup> December, or until they hit a submission cap in each genre. They also accept flash prose.

The Deadlands
<\/strong>This is a speculative fiction magazine. For fiction, their guidelines say, \u201cThe Deadlands exists in liminal spaces between life, death, and elsewhere. We are looking for fiction that concerns itself with death\u2014but also everything death may involve.\u201d They have detailed guidelines, please read them carefully. They publish fiction, fiction reprints, poetry, art, and nonfiction. They are open in December for fiction only; other genres are closed.

Astrolabe<\/strong>
They want \u201cwork about how we seek out, discover, and grasp onto connection. Into the woods. Across a line. Beneath the ocean. Along a seam. Into the branches of an alternate present or the crevasse of an alternate future. Across the rifts between one another. And then, once we find one other, the myths we make. We\u2019re excited to see as many interpretations of this broad theme as there are stars in the night sky. StarShipSofa<\/strong>
This is a science fiction magazine. \u201cFrom the soft, social science fiction to the weird pulpy stuff to the vigorous hard SF and YA adventure. We welcome all sub-genres and all variety of punks in all their colours. From high-octane action to quiet philosophical stories, we\u2019re after it all. Science fiction is a rich and diverse genre, push its boundaries as far as you can go.
We welcome translations and are very interested in stories that take place\/written by authors outside the US\/Anglo-sphere, as well as alternative movements and styles. These include (but not limited to) \u201cnon-Western\u201d science fiction, Chinese SF, Soviet speculative fiction, Afro-futurism, etc. The exception is that the SF element must be the backbone of the story. It cannot be an afterthought, or simple window dressing.\u201d They also accept some reprints (see guidelines). And, \u201cPaid story length runs from 3,000 words up to 7,000 words. Most of the stories we accept are between 3500 and 5000 words.\u201d Do not send fantasy or supernatural horror stories.
