Writing Reviews: The Hidden Benefits for Freelance Writers

Freelance writers have a lot of different choices to consider when selecting assignments they want to spend their days working on. Many freelance writers choose to work with clients who pay them for their services writing articles, blog posts, product descriptions, and more. Yet many freelance writers also take advantage of the opportunity to write their own pieces and self-publish them under their own byline. There are many different websites that allow freelance writers to easily self-publish articles, and often writers have the opportunity to write articles on any topics they choose. Writing reviews is a great way that freelance writers can really maximize the benefits of their job.

Write What You Know

Most freelance writers have heard the saying, “Write what you know.” There are many reasons to write what you know. For one, your research time is limited, and this can boost efficiency. Another reason is that you can often write more quickly and produce better results when you write on a subject you are familiar with. When you write reviews, you can write about a place you have visited, a restaurant you have eaten at, products you have tried, and even services that you have benefited from. By using these products and services or visiting these locations in your free time, you provide yourself with education and experiences that you can draw from when you sit down to write.

Helping Others

Freelance writers are consumers, just as everyone else is. We have the ability to share our consumer experiences with others through our trade. So many people read reviews today before making purchasing decisions. They may check out a review on a restaurant before deciding where to go for dinner. They may read numerous reviews before buying a new car, deciding which hotel to stay at on vacation, or even before deciding which lipstick to buy. Other people want to learn about your experiences, and the good news is that you can make money while helping others in this way.

Tax Deductions

In some cases, the products or services used for research in your reviews may be tax deductible. Certainly you cannot deduct the entire expense of a new car by writing a product review that provides you with under $50 in income. Yet a portion of this expense may be tax deductible. You will need to keep excellent records of expenses as well as income generated from these expenses, and then you can work with your accountant to determine what portion is tax deductible. While you will need to save your receipts and document income carefully, this is a great way to enjoy life while minimizing your tax burden at the end of the year.

The next time you buy something, or almost anything actually, you can consider writing a review on it. There are various different outlets that allow you to publish articles and reviews for an up-front fee or that will you with a different fee structure in place. These reviews provide you with a great way to supplement your income, ease your tax burden, and help others in the process.
