The American Gardener is the American Horticultural Society’s official publication. They publish pieces that appeal to experienced amateur gardeners, and topics range from garden design to environmentally appropriate gardening. The magazine is mostly written by freelancers, and they accept article pitches for feature articles and department sections.
They want writers to submit proposals via email. They have detailed instructions for submitting an article proposal on their submission guidelines page.
They occasionally reimburse for travel and other expenses. They have pay a 25% kill-fee if they decide to not publish an article.
Payment is $300-600 for features and $150-$200 for departments.
According to their website:
“When querying for the first time, authors should submit relevant writing samples, and briefly describe their personal experience with the subject matter they are proposing to cover. We look for writers who have some gardening experience or training, but who also have an ability to write in a strong journalistic style, complete with lively quotes from interviews or written sources.”
