Some freelance writers love to work on a wide range of projects that cover a diverse range of topics. As a freelance writer, you do have the ability to research and learn more about unique topics that you otherwise would not have had the opportunity or perhaps even the desire to learn about. Yet through freelance writing assignments, you can expand your knowledge of so many different topics. As exciting and interesting as it can be to write about topics that you may have little knowledge of at first, there are actually some benefits associated with specializing in a niche and writing about what you already know.

You Are an Expert

Everyone has at least a few things they are passionate about. Through prior work experience, volunteer experiences, personal or business travel, your personal life or interests and more, you may have become at least a moderate expert on several different topics. You may have a unique knowledge base that you can draw from when writing articles on these subjects, and you can use that knowledge to more effectively and efficiently write interesting and in-depth pieces on these subjects.

Little Research Required

When you specialize in a niche, you may specialize in a topic that you already know a lot about or that you have already researched thoroughly for other writing projects in the past. By writing about what you already know, you typically do not have to conduct additional research on the subject. On occasion, a moderate amount of research may be required. However, typically far less time will be spent researching and writing on a subject that you already have extensive knowledge of. This can save you a considerable amount of time, increasing your productivity and profitability in your efforts.

Recurring Work

Those clients who have the need for niche or specialty pieces often have the need for new content to be written on a repeated or even regular basis. Once you have established yourself as a knowledgeable or even expert writer with regards to specific subject matter, you can more easily find recurring or repeat work. This may allow you to charge a higher rate with those clients. It also may save you time that otherwise would have been spent searching for new assignments to do. Ultimately, you would rather be working and earning money than wasting your time looking for a new project to work on.

There are downsides associated with writing about the same topic every day. When you write about the same thing repeatedly, you may feel as though you are repeating your words and that your work lacks luster and passion. Because of this, if you do choose to take advantage of the benefits of focusing on a specific niche with your writing, you may consider writing on that niche on a limited basis. You may work on assignments in several different niches, or you may continue to leave a little room in your workday to write on new and different topics as well.
