These are calls for fiction. Some of these markets also accept non-fiction, book reviews, and poetry. They are all open for submissions, or are opening soon, or have deadlines approaching. They pay $100, and a few pay considerably more. None charge a submission fee. — S. Kalekar

Selene Quarterly Magazine
This speculative romance, mystery, and action-adventure quarterly periodical will open briefly for submissions in September. They publish fiction, non-fiction and poetry that “dwells in the shadows.” Also see specific guidelines for Astreus Quarterly (must identify with at least one marginalized group) and spotlight short story (one story involving the moon, or a moon, as a central element alongside the main theme of an issue).
Reading period: 1-15 September
Length: Up to 7,500 words for fiction, up to 100 lines for poetry
Pay: $0.03/word for prose (potentially additional pay for future audio and anthology rights), $35 for essays, $15 for reviews, $0.25/line for poetry

The Eagle Has Landed: Reprint anthology for moon-related SF
Neil Clarke, of Clarkesworld Magazine, is editing an anthology of reprint stories celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11’s moon landing. He is looking for moon-related science fiction – stories must take place on the moon or feature the moon in a significant way. Translations are welcome. The anthology will be published by Night Shade Books.
Deadline: 15 September 2018
Length: 3,000-22,000 words
Pay: $0.01/word pro-rata against royalties

The Cockroach Conservatory: Volume 2
Some of the themes they are looking for are time, militarism, reality and singularity. They like weird fiction and humor, and accept multiple submissions. They also accept poetry. The guidelines suggest potential contributors take a look at their previously published anthology and listen to their podcast to get a feel for the kind of work they are looking for.

They publish fiction, non-fiction, poetry, interviews and reviews primarily focused on the culture of war. The magazine is published annually.

Event
This Canadian literary magazine recently removed its Submittable fee for fiction and poetry submissions. For fiction, they want “compelling characters, plots that surprise us, narratives that move us, stories that have something new to say.”

Length: Up to 5,000 words for fiction; up to 8 poems
Pay: A minimum of CAD30/page for fiction, up to CAD500, and of CAD35/page for poetry, up to CAD500

Room Magazine
This feminist Canadian magazine accepts work by women, transgender men, two-spirit and non-binary writers. They are now accepting fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry for their unthemed issue.

Length: Up to 3,500 words for prose, up to five poems

Spring Song Press: Steam and Lace (Steampunk) Anthology
Stories must address the “Steam and Lace” steampunk theme in some way, and must have a speculative element. They want stories with clever, heroic characters. The editors are aiming for fantasy, rather than straight science fiction. They strongly prefer “clean” noblebright stories.
Deadline: 1 November 2018
Length: 1,000-10,000 words

The Georgia Review
This literary magazine reads unsolicited work after 15 August each year. They publish fiction, non-fiction, book reviews and poetry. There are no guidelines in terms of length for fiction – they have published work of less than a page in length to more than 60 pages – but they discourage writers from sending novel extracts. For essays, they want “provocative, thesis-oriented work that can engage both the general reader and the specialist.” They do not charge a fee for mailed submissions.
Deadline: 15 May 2019
Length: No length restrictions for fiction and essays; up to 5 poems
Pay: $50/page for prose, $50 for book briefs, $4/line for poetry

LIVE
This take-home story paper, from Gospel Publishing House, is distributed weekly in adult Sunday School classes. They publish fiction, non-fiction, “how-to” articles, short humor, poetry and first-person anecdotes. Their guidelines say, “We do not accept Bible fiction or SciFi. The stories should be encouraging, challenging, and/or humorous. Even problem-centered stories should be upbeat. Stories should not be preachy, critical, or moralizing. They should not present pat, trite, or simplistic answers to problems.” See guidelines about plot, character, and style preferences.

Length: 800-1,200 for cover stories, 200-600 words for inside stories, 12-25 lines for poetry
