MiscellaneousThe Muse is an online career platform that is a go-to destination for people to research companies and careers. They publish career advice, actionable tips, and true stories of getting a job or a promotion. They previously indicated to pay $150 to $400 per article, while according to an old tweet by their deputy editor’s, the pay rate is $300 to $600. BBC Worklife
MiscellaneousBBC Worklife is “a BBC.com features site about the way we work, live and think in a rapidly shifting world, where the boundaries between the professional and the personal are increasingly blurrier.” They publish reported, narrative features of 1,200 to 2,000 words. The Progress Network
MiscellaneousThe Progress Network is “a movement that speaks to a better future in a world dominated by voices that suggest a worse one.” They would love to receive substantive good news, solutions journalism stories, constructive opinions on current affairs, and “progress-oriented takes on historical, psychological, philosophical, and cultural themes.” They accept reported articles, opinion essays and think pieces, interviews, reviews, and listicles. According to an old tweet, their rates fall somewhere between $250-$650 "depending on length, whether it will include original reporting or not, etc.". Parapraxis
MiscellaneousParapraxis is an all-volunteer, print and online magazine of psychoanalysis. They publish twice a year in print (themed issues) and semi-frequently on their website (unthemed). Model RailroadingModel Railroad Hobbyist is a free magazine for people interested in Model Railroads. According to their write for us page, they typically pay around $230 per article of 3,000 words, plus photos. Boating / SailingPassageMaker Magazine covers all aspects of trawlers and ocean motorboats and welcomes articles from around the world. Articles should be a combination of personal experience and technical/ informative elements. They previously indicated pay of $300 to $950 for magazine articles; general travel, how-to pieces about the boats and their systems, the crew, and the places they travel are welcome. PetsAMAZONAS Magazine is a renowned publication, beloved by tens of thousands of tropical fish enthusiasts who are passionate about thriving freshwater aquariums in homes, offices, and beyond. According to their guidelines, first-time contributors typically earn $100 to $300, while recurring contributors can make up to $600 for full features with images. FeministDame is a website "For Women Who Know Better." They are "smart, quick-witted, opinionated and unapologetic." They publish essays, news, analysis, and unique takes on relationships, gender politics, sex, race, entertainment, the arts, business, politics, internet culture, health and everything in-between. According to their pitch guide, they pay $350 to $750 for reported stories.
American Gardener
Farm & GardeningAmerican Gardener publishes pieces that appeal to experienced amateur gardeners, and topics range from garden design to environmentally appropriate gardening. The magazine is mostly written by freelancers, and they accept article pitches for feature articles and department sections. Word length for feature articles is 1,500 to 2,500 words, and column stories run 900-1,000 words. WritingAuthors Publish publishes articles about various aspects of writing and publishing. According to their guidelines, they pay between $50 and $150 per article. Herizons
FeministHerizons is a Canadian publication with a feminist readership. Articles about "social commentary on art, culture, and legal/political/community affairs related to gender, race, and sexuality" are what they usually publish. They are only accepting submissions from women, non-binary, and Two-Spirit writers based in Canada. According to their submissions form, they pay $600 for features (1500-1200 words), $250 (600 words) for guest columns, $175 for reviews (500 words), and $125 (350 words) for book reviews. Protocolized
ScienceProtocolized is the Summer of Protocols (SoP) research program’s year-round publication. Members of the protocol research community﹣SoP alumni, hobbyist researchers, and guest lecturers alike﹣write every essay, case study, and sci-fi story you will find there. They publish three types of pieces: stories, studies, and science. Writers should aim for a lenght of 1,500–2,500 words. According to their guidelines, they pay USD $750 upon publication. CanadianThe Monitor is a bimonthly policy and current affairs magazine by CCPA (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives). They publish “feature articles, original research, book reviews, letters to the editor, and illustrations.” According to an old tweet by their senior editor, they pay $300 for short articles of 700 words, $500 for 1,300 to 1,500 words, up to $800 for feature length stories, and $150 to $800 for illustrations. They focus on relationship building, uplifting storytelling, and holding colonial institutions accountable. They welcome news, stories, features, investigations, and photo essays. According to their pitch guide, they pay $250 to $750 per story (500 to 2,000 words).
Kill Your Darlings
AustralianKill Your Darlings is an Australian online magazine that is dedicated to arts and culture. They publish a wide range of content, including commentaries, essays and criticisms that run from 1500–2500 words and 1200–1500 words. Health and WellnessSelf covers health and wellness. They are always seeking new writers and are especially excited to work more frequently with BIPOC, LGBTQ+ writers and writers from other marginalized groups. They want stories that explore personal, community, or public health, ideally with a service element. Their main categories of focus are health, fitness, food, beauty, love, and lifestyle. According to their pitch guide, rates start at $450 for short and quick news stories, $500 for reported service stories, and $800 for features.
Sport Fishing
Outdoors / Hunting / FishingSport Fishing Magazine publishes content for enthusiasts based on ‘serious saltwater fishing around North America and beyond’. They run features between 1,800 to 2,400 words. According to their submission guidelines, they pay $750 for print features, and up to $1,500 if photos are included. They pay $200 for 1,000 words and $300 for more than 1000 words for digital features.
Gray’s Sporting Journal
Outdoors / Hunting / FishingGray’s Sporting Journal is a journal for hunters and anglers. They are always looking for features on hunting and fishing, and publish four themed issues a year. They publish Expeditions – travel pieces of hunting and fishing locations, Yarns – campfire tales that can be fact or fiction, and poetry. According to their submission guidelines, pay is $850-$1,000 for Expeditions (2,500 and 3,000 words) plus $75 per picture; $600-$1,250 for features (750 to 1,500 words; pay based on quality, not length); $600 for yarns (750 to 1,500 words); and $100 for poems (shorter than 1,000 words).
Adi Magazine
General Interest / NewsAdi Magazine is a literary magazine of global politics that is dedicated to rehumanizing policy. They publish fiction, poetry, nonfiction (essays, interviews, and reportage), and translated work alongside original illustrations. According to their guidelines, they pay $600 for essays, $250 for interviews, $150 per poem, $500 for short fiction (up to 5,000 words), and $200 for flash fiction (under 1,000 words). TravelHidden Compass is a literary travel magazine, published online. They want true stories that push "the travel genre and delve into the spirit, culture, history, ecology, perils or residents of a place.
