19 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors and Publishers

Here’s our latest roundup of calls for pitches directly from editors.

Before contacting any of these publications, please carefully study their website, as well as their call for pitches, and make sure that you are sending a highly relevant pitch. If you’re relatively new to pitching, or want to improve your pitching ability, please watch this free lecture.

You’ll note that rates vary significantly for each of these publications, anywhere from $100 per article, up to $1.50 per word. Keep in mind that rates are not set in stone and may need to be negotiated.

Opportunity to write for Sunday Mirror & People: “Back on the features desk at Sunday Mirror and People this week. Paranting is a lifestyle magazine for parents. Their editor is seeking pitches for their Issue # 4 which will be for Black History Month UK. She wants “pitches for UK news, international news, science, travel, fashion, society, home, garden, health, and beauty.” She would also like to feature columns from 3 Black parents. Passage is a Canadian leftist opinion/analysis publication. Their managing editor is currently accepting article pitches for both opinion and analysis pieces. Insider is a general interest website that aims to share all the adventures that life has to offer They’re currently seeking pitches about Disney Parks, specifically  about “sharing your favorite things to do in the parks.” Rates start at $140 per article. Learn more in this Tweet. Apply here.

Input is a tech publication. Their senior review editor is seeking pitches for reviews of “COOL and INTERESTING products” such as “mechanical keyboards, weird laptops, EVs, dope toys.” According to their Tweet they pay $300+ per story. Details here. View their website here.

Metro Opinion features “opinions, real life stories, and analysis from experts in their field.” They are seeking “first-person and opinion pitches, where someone has a special insight, a unique experience to share, or a strong angle on a subject.” Their rates generally start at £70 for 600 to 800 words. Remezcla is an independent media brand that covers emerging Latin music, entertainment, and culture. They are continuously building their roster and accepting pitches. Their trending news editor is seeking trending Latino/a/e news, noteworthy movie/TV reviews, timely features, opinion pieces, and “basically anything and everything with a Latino/a/e twist.” Their rates for features start at $100. The Record is a cybersecurity news publication. They are looking for “analysis, features, and scoops on diverse cybersecurity issues.” They will pay up to $1 per word. Wordplay is The New York Times’ crossword column. Their senior editor has tweeted, “Are you a journalist who loves games of all kinds and puzzles? Do you have a deep interest in language and how it impacts our lives? Wordplay would love to hear your pitches for freelance articles!” Rate is $1.50 per word. Diem is a new social universe designed for women and non-binary folks. They are currently seeking “stories that cover the intersection of gender and power across verticals like technology, health, finance, relationships and culture.” They are also seeking “stories that examine the candid conversations that we have with each other—about friendships, birth control, toxic masculinity, burnout, harassment, chronic pain, big career moves, enthralling books, and everything in between.” Their rates start at $200 per story (around 700 words). Rabble.ca is a Canadian progressive news website. Their editor has tweeted, “Are you residing in Northern Canada and would like to report/pontificate about the North’s #Elxn44 issues? 1843 is a digital magazine that features narrative journalism. The magazine is The Economist’s sister publication. Their US senior editor is looking for feature ideas. Popular Science is a science and technology magazine. Their executive editor is “looking for a reporter with some solid science clips and experience writing about cannabis (ideally in a lifestyle/culture kinda way, not just policy or health studies) for an upcoming project.” Since it will be a feature package, rate will be at least $1 per word. Input is a tech publication. They are accepting pitches for features. Their features editor has tweeted, “Broadly speaking, we’re interested in stories at the intersection of technology and culture. Their editor is seeking a “writer or radio journo in NYC with music production or local jazz scene knowledge.” This is for “a feature on local musicians and how they recorded an album during lockdown.” “The assignment is editorial/journalistic in nature, but I should make clear it’s content marketing rather than journalism.” They will pay $1 per word or comparable day rate.
