14 Calls for Pitches Directly from Editors

Here’s our latest roundup of calls for pitches directly from editors.

Before contacting any of these publications, please carefully study their website, as well as their call for pitches, and make sure that you are sending a highly relevant pitch. If you’re relatively new to pitching, or want to improve your pitching ability, please watch this free lecture.

The senior health editor of Insider is currently seeking pitches from writers on the topic of living with multiple sclerosis.  It is not clear how much they pay for this opportunity, but they are reported to pay 20 cents per word. Pit is a magazine with roots in pit barbecue cooking. They are currently seeking pitches for their issue on “Night Markets.” They generally pay £150 per piece. To learn more, read their pitching guidelines, and this Twitter post.

Positive News is a website and quarterly print magazine that “publishes good journalism about good things.”  Their editor is currently seeking pitches for their “life after” slot. They want “an in-depth look at how someone has grown from a major challenge, and how their experience can inspire others.” Pay is 25p/word.  To learn more, refer to their pitching guide, and this Twitter thread.

Matador Network is the largest independent travel publisher in the world. Their editor is looking for travel writers who are from/living in Alabama for “trip-planning stuff.” Pay will be $400 for about 900 words. If interested, email jacqueline@matadornetwork.com. Intrepid Magazine is a UK-based female-first adventure magazine. Their editor is commissioning for the next 4 months:

  • September: Running Adventures
  • October: Climbing/Mountaineering
  • November: Ocean Rowing
  • December: Outdoor Swimming

Alma is a Jewish feminist publication. Their founder/editor has tweeted, “It’s that time: I’m looking for Rosh Hashanah/High Holiday pitches for Alma! Specifically interested in pieces that explore holiday traditions not often covered in mainstream Jewish pubs, esp. those with multicultural roots. Pitch me at molly@heyalma.com.” “Does your Moroccan Jewish family have a holiday tradition you’d like to share? Do you have a queer interpretation of High Holiday liturgy? NUNAR Magazine is a DMV-based youth culture magazine. They are seeking “a spiritualist who can give meaning to the ongoing surge in spiritualism, ghost sightings, and communication to the dead caused by the pandemic.” They are also seeking “a writer who can capsulize climate grief/eco-anxiety and how it is shaping your life goals for the decade ahead.” They will pay $100 flat for 2 pages. PCMA Convene Magazine is “the leading meetings industry publication for educational content and professional development.” They are looking for a freelance writer to help with their advertorial content. The candidate “should have experience in writing advertorials/branded content and working in collaboration with clients, including following a review process.” Knowledge of the business events/travel/hospitality industry will be a huge plus. TikTok Bytes is a daily newsletter that covers all the top news on TikTok. They have “an audience of influencers and brands seeking to build their reach on TikTok and build a full-time living on TikTok.” They are looking for freelance pitches. They would love pitches on “subcultures on TikTok that no other outlet has covered; opinion pieces about TikTok; breaking news about TikTok that hasn’t already been written about; how to success stories on TikTok; unique stories about how to succeed on TikTok.” They will pay $200 for 800 words. gal-dem is a British online and print magazine that is dedicated to sharing the stories of women and non-binary people of color. They are seeking climate-related pitches from writers of color. They are looking for: “hyperlocal feature reporting in cities / towns across the U.K”; “actionable service pieces with key takeaways”; “solutions-oriented spotlights on how communities and people are adapting, innovating and campaigning”; and “experiential, human interest pieces written directly by those facing upheaval due to the crisis”. Public Books is “an online magazine of ideas, arts, and scholarship.” They are seeking pitches for “Antiquities, a new section spotlighting work from diverse writers about the ancient world and its global legacies.” They will pay $100 per piece (2,500 words) to untenured scholars. Are We Europe is a quarterly publication that commissions articles and photo series from young journalists in Europe. They are seeking pitches for their next issue: Disinformation. They want feature articles (1,200-2,000 words), fiction, and photography that “examine how online disinformation affects our offline lives.” “What are the places, events or communities across Europe that teach us something unexpected about the real-life consequences of disinformation?” They pay 100 for very short pieces and up to 300 for flagship stories. For details, refer to their Tweet and pitch guide.

Life & Thyme is a print magazine and website that specializes in culinary storytelling and food journalism. They are accepting pitches. They are “looking to dive into the inner workings of the restaurant industry—everything from ingredient sourcing to labor issues, immigration, unions, appropriation, kitchen culture and more.” For most stories, they usually pay $200 to $400. Science for the People (SftP) is a magazine and website dedicated to “building and promoting social movements and political struggles around progressive and radical perspectives on science and society.” They are accepting proposals in English or Spanish for their Winter 2021 issue, “Cooperation: Theory and Practice for the Commons.” They pay $250 for feature-length stories of 2,000 words and above; $200 for shorter features, reviews, columns, and other articles of 1,200 to 1,500 words; $100 for short pieces of 600 to 1,000 words and interviews; and $50 for poems.
