10 Short Story Publishers Paying $100+ Per Story

These are markets for fiction, and a few also accept non-fiction, poetry, and translations. Some of these have just opened their reading periods, or have deadlines coming up. They pay writers $100. A few pay considerably more. — S. Kalekar

Mischief Corner Books
They are reading stories for their ‘Escape from the Holidays’ submission call. Their guidelines say, “The end of year holidays can get overwhelming for anyone. …  Sometimes it’s just easier to escape from it all, running away from the responsibilities and expectations, or ignore the underlying disappointment from relatives who don’t see eye-to-eye with you.

Because escaping the holiday grind can lead to new, unexpected paths, and breathe new life into one that’s been stuck in a rut. … Sometimes, taking a chance on the unknown leads to what you really want.” They welcome all genres except erotica. Stories that are queer-positive with diverse characters will be prioritized.
Deadline: 21 September 2018
Length: 5k-15k words; also accept novelette and novella-length stories
Pay: $80-120; royalties for novelette and novella length stories
Details here.

Nightscape Press
They want short stories for their ‘Ashes and Entropy’ anthology – gritty cosmic horror and noir (or neo-noir) stories with a strong emotional core. The content guidelines are open for interpretation. The guidelines say that great writing, “originality, and pushing these genres to new heights will get you to the top of the slush pile faster than anything else.” They only want work from underrepresented writers (see guidelines). There is space for only a couple of stories for this open call, so it will likely be extremely competitive. They are also open for their new novel charity line submissions during September for all writers of horror, weird fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and young adult, where writers, a charity of their choice, and the publisher each get a royalty split.
Deadline: 30 September 2018
Length: Up to 6,000 words – open for longer but payment will be called at 6,000 words; if the stretch Kickstarter stretch goal is met for an audiobook, payment will be doubled
Pay: $0.06/word
Details here (scroll down).

Feral Cat Publishers
They want stories for their ‘Bubble Off Plumb’ anthology. This is a colloquial expression for things being not quite right. They want short stories of such a nature; odd, unsettling, full of twists, etc. All genres are welcome.
Deadline: 30 September 2018
Length: 1,000-5,000 words
Pay: $0.03/word up to $150, and royalties
Details here.

The Bare Life Review
They have recently opened submissions for their second issue. The magazine publishes work by immigrant and refugee authors – from foreign-born authors living in the US, and writers living abroad who currently hold refugee and/or asylum-seeker status. They accept fiction, non-fiction, and poetry – the work may, but need not, deal explicitly with issues of immigration, exile, or refuge. They welcome translations. American-born translators may submit work by eligible writers, but in such cases payment must be issued to the author.
Deadline: 30 November 2018
Length: Fiction up to 8,000 words; non-fiction up to 6,000 words; 3-5 poems, up to 10 pages in total
Pay: $750 for full-length prose pieces, $300 for accepted poems or shorter prose
Details here.

Twelfth Planet Press
They have just opened submissions for novellas of fantasy, science fiction, horror, or light crime. Their guidelines say, “We’re looking for a diverse range of authors, story settings, time periods, cultural backgrounds and protagonists. Magic, history, fantasy, steampunk and science fiction are all welcome.” They want gritty pieces that challenge the system, stories that resist and rebel, and also books that comfort and inspire. They are interested in work from marginalized voices, and also welcome stories from non-marginalized writers.
Deadline: 30 November 2018
Length: 17,000-40,000 words
Pay: $300, royalties
Details here.

This literary magazine has just opened for submissions. They consider fiction and non-fiction submissions, but no unsolicited poetry. See various editors’ statements in the About section to see the kind of writing they prefer.

Pay: $10/page of prose, $20/page of poetry, up to $150

The NoSleep Podcast
They want horror stories for their podcast, written from a first-person perspective. Stories should provide good audio cues and make good use of dialogue. They do not want narratives that solely rely on graphic gore or sexual violence; thoughtful is the most effective. They also accept script formats written as an audio drama starring two or more characters, with more being preferred. Dramas should ideally last 20-40 minutes.
Deadline: Open now
Length: Flash (up to 1,200 words), short fiction (1,200-2,500 words), regular submissions (at least 2,500 words)
Pay: $40 for flash, $100 for short fiction, $125 for regular submissions
Details here.

Tales from the Canyons of the Damned
This is a magazine of dark science fiction, horror, and slipstream. Their guidelines say, “Think of the Canyons as a literary Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, or Outer Limits – it’s Netflix’s Black Mirror.” Stories must be written well, easily read on-screen, and appropriate for radio. Translations are welcome. Apart from electronic and first print rights, they ask for regular-release anthology and special edition Omnibus anthology rights. Authors must be willing to sign copies.
Deadline: Open now
Length: 500-5,000 words, longer stories may be serialised if fit
Pay: $0.03/word for the first 5,000 words, capped at $150

The Massachusetts Review: Working Title
For their Working Title feature, they accept prose (fiction and non-fiction) that is longer than what they accept for the print edition, as well as work that integrates visual and interactive elements unique to digital platforms. “MR will accept mailed submissions for Working Titles ONLY between May 1 and September 30.” This is when regular submissions are closed for The Massachusetts Review. There is no fee for mailed submissions.
Deadline: Rolling
Length: 7,000-25,000 words
Pay: $250
