10 More Magazines that Pay Writers $200 or More

As part of my weekly effort to find paying gigs for writers, here are ten magazines that pay $200 or more for articles. Some of the magazines don’t list pay specifics, but writers should expect quite competitive payment from these magazines.

  1. Ensemble Vacations: Travel writers can get published in this magazine by writing articles on the art, food, lodgings, and attractions of destinations all over the world. Rates are competitive and more information can be found on writer’s guidelines here.
  2. Planning: Those who contribute to this publication–which is organized by the American Planning Organization–will writing about urban, suburban, rural, or small town planning. Planning news can focus on projects like neighborhood revitalization, social planning, and more. Writers can expect to be paid between $100 and $1,000 for successful submissions. Check out the contributor guidelines to learn more.
  3. Aurora: This is a publication of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Articles in Aurora focus on any story that could be of interest to the university community. Payment is typically $0.50 per word and more information is posted online. Even if you’re not a member of this university’s community, College Grads should look into writing for their Alumni magazine.
  4. SubTerrain: This magazine publishes poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Check out some back issues of the publication to learn more about the types of articles and stories run in SubTerrain. Payment is $50 per poem and $50 per published prose page. Visit the writer’s guidelines page if you’re interested in being published in SubTerrain.
  5. Edible Milwaukee: This is a great publication for all the gourmand writers out there. Try out all of the Milwaukee area’s best restaurants and or tell readers about unique and delectable recipes. Pay rates for stories published in Edible Milwaukee are usually between $0.15 and $0.30 per word. Read more about submission guidelines on the magazine’s website.

     

     

  6. Canadian Newcomer: This magazine covers current events and business news that’s pertinent to a Canadian audience. Payment for published submissions varies, but it is generally $0.10 per word and up. A first-time writer for Canadian Newcomer will always be paid at the basic rates of $0.10 per word.   7. Salvo: Writers interested in writing for this magazine should query the editor to see if their idea will be acceptable. Not only do querying writers need to explain their ideas, but they are also expected to give a little background information about their experience regarding the subject at hand. Salvo runs stories on sex, science, and society, and articles will ideally offer a “systematic deconstruction” of fallacious philosophies and ideologies. Payment is $0.20 per word and submission guidelines are posted here.
  8. HOW: Writers with an interest in art and design should submit to HOW. This is a business publication for graphic designers. Article submissions should cover graphic design projects of note and will ideally focus on projects taking place in diverse geographic locations. Payment for a 1,200 word article will typically be between $250 and $800.
  9. Working Mother: This publication runs features about issues that impact women double-tasking as mothers and working professionals at the same time. Writers submitting a query should also include links to published work.
  10. New Mexico Magazine: Writers with expertise in southwest living can submit stories about New Mexico landscapes, attitudes, and people to New Mexico Magazine. Payment ranges between $0.35 and $0.40.
