10 Magazines that Pay Writers $250 or More

There are so many magazines in constant need of quality writing from freelance writers. As part of my weekly effort to send you paid writing opportunities, here is a collection of 10 magazines that pay writers $250 or more.

Some of these magazines pay less for some articles, but all of them pay $250 for at least some of the writing they publish.

1. Grays Sporting Journal is a hunting and outdoor sports magazine. Think fly fishing, duck hunting, big game hunting, etc. They publish stories, essays, poetry, and travel writing. They pay $600-$1250 for features, $600 for yarns, and $100 for poems. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

2. Popular Woodworking is the magazine for the craft of fine woodworking. They publish essays, ‘tricks of the trade’, and features about woodworking projects. Payment for their “end grain” column starts at $250 for 600 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

3. Kitplanes is the magazine for amateur built aircraft. They want articles from actual aircraft builders and experts in their field. They pay between $250 and $1,000 for articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

4. Spin•Off is a quarterly magazine devoted to handspinning yarns and fibers. They accept articles in a variety of categories including spinning tips, basics, travel, dyes, essays, and tools. Payment is $50 per published page, up to a maximum of 6 pages, or approximately 2,700 words. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

5. Italian America is the magazine for people of Italian heritage in the United States. They want “intriguing stories about Italian Americans that may involve such themes as history, travel, culture/heritage, achievements, contributions, and social issues.” Features are 800-1,100 words. 6. Canoeroots is a magazine all about canoes, “from bow to stern.” They publish 3 issues annually. They’re open to “well-written epics, cultural adventures, environmental dilemmas, personality profiles on important paddlers either historic or contemporary, humor, fiction and more.” They pay up to $0.20 a word. 7. Sporting Classics is a magazine of fishing and hunting. They cover travel, hunting stories, firearms, tackle, techniques, and more. According to our research, they are known to pay $300 to $700 per article. You can contact their editors here.

8. Wooden Boat is a bi-monthly magazine for wooden boat owners, builders and designers. They are “devoted exclusively to the design, building, care, preservation, and use of wooden boats, both commercial and pleasure, old and new, sail and power.” For features, they pay $250-$300 per 1,000 words. 9. Beat&Button is the magazine for the art and craft of beading. They offer how-to and feature articles. They want proposals for stories about accomplished beadmakers and bead-jewelry articles. They pay up to $400 for feature length articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

10. Girls Life is a lifestyle magazine for young girls. They publish articles about fashion, celebrities, relationships, etc. They pay $300 or more for articles. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.
