Rock & Gem

This is a magazine for rockhounding and lapidary hobbyists. They particularly want field trip and lapidary project articles. They also want articles pertaining to specimen collecting, gold prospecting, club activities, basic and advanced lapidary skills and artist profiles.
Length: 2,000-3,000 words for features; articles of shorter length are considered

This is an Australian literary magazine for children. They accept writing from authors from outside Australia too – fiction, non-fiction, plays and activities, aimed at Australian children. They welcome submissions from creators of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Asian material. Query first for non-fiction. Mailed submissions only.
Length: Up to 2,000 words for fiction and non-fiction (department lengths vary), 100 lines for poetry; send 1-3 manuscripts

Raising Arizona Kids

The target audience is caring, open-minded and intellectually curious Arizona parents within the 25-59 age range. The magazine is geared to parents of children from birth through high school. They work only with Arizona-based writers. They also publish web-exclusive posts.

Western Pennsylvania History Magazine

This is the region’s oldest continuously-published magazine, by the Senator John Heinz History Centre, in association with the Smithsonian Institution. They publish articles about aspects of Pennsylvania’s history. Book reviews are unpaid.

Historical Society of Michigan: Michigan History and Chronicle

Michigan History is the state’s popular-history magazine and is read by history buffs and professionals. They accept articles about the state’s diverse past, and its history and peoples. Chronicle is a membership publication of the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM). It explores the history and heritage of Michigan’s peoples, and has special sections that serve HSM’s members.
Length: 1,500-2,500 for features; various for departments

Nevada Magazine

This is the official state tourism magazine. Readers are active travelers and Nevada enthusiasts. They have several departments that freelancers can break into; topics for these include food and drink, destination pieces on rural towns and large cities, news, travel and history.
Length: 500-1,500

Popular Woodworking

They buy articles on all aspects of the craft, from tool use to technique to builds. Their ‘End Grain’ column is a good place for freelancers to break into the magazine – it reflects writers’ thoughts on woodworking as a profession or hobby. It can be serious or humorous, and writers need not be professional woodworkers. Another column is Tricks of the Trade. Query for features.

This is a magazine about general aviation flying. They welcome stories from aviators of all backgrounds. Features include Lessons Learned from Flying (and About Life), first-person stories and interesting, insightful ways in which pilots can reduce their risks.

Cruising Outpost Magazine

They want features on cruising adventures and boats. Departments include anecdotes while at sea, sailing with animals, recipes and dumb stuff done by cruisers. Website articles are unpaid.

The Cincinnati Review

They consider literary non-fiction, fiction, poetry and translations. They are open for submissions until 1 March, 2018.
Length: Up to 20 pages of non-fiction, up to 40 pages of fiction, up to 10 pages of poetry (see guidelines for further details on lengths)
