10 Fiction Magazines Paying up to $700 for Short Stories

These magazines /anthologies pay up to approximately $700 for fiction; they are open now, or will open soon. A few also accept other genres, like non-fiction and poetry. Some of the calls are themed.

Cosmic Horror Monthly
They publish cosmic horror, Lovecraftian, and weird fiction, and related nonfiction. They have two regular reading periods, 1st to 7th January, and 1st to 7th July; and they issue special submission calls periodically. Submission is via their Moksha portal.

Diabolical Plots
They want fiction – “science fiction, fantasy, horror (everything must have a speculative element, even horror).” Please read their detailed guidelines. What they like includes, but is not limited to: Weird fiction, Sense of wonder, Strong character and plot arcs, and Strong worldbuilding, hinting at more to see around the edges of the story.
Reading period: 7th to 21st July 2025

The Orange & Bee
This Australian Substack-based magazine “publishes original and contemporary short stories, poems, and essays that explore, expand on, and subvert the rich traditions of international folklore, with a strong focus on fairy tales (though we also sometimes dabble in other forms of folklore, such as fables, myths, and legends).” They do not want work for children.
Deadline: 14 July 2025 (see guidelines)
Length: Up to 4,000 words for fiction and non-fiction, up to 50 lines for poetry

If There’s Anyone Left
They want science fiction and speculative fiction from marginalized writers only (people of color, the LGBTQ2S+ community, members of marginalized genders, and disabled and neurodiverse people; see guidelines). They also accept translations.

They want fairy tale informed work. They accept prose fiction, verse fiction, nonfiction, creative scholarship, and poetry. They’re accepting work on the food theme. They also accept translations.

Flame Tree Anthologies
They are reading fiction for four themed anthologies: two romantic fantasy anthologies titled A Breath of Time and Of Love & Dragons (stories of 2,000-4,000 words, deadline for both of these is 20th July 2025), as well as for The Valkyries and Odysseus (both of these are part of their Myths, Gods, and Monsters series, story length is 3,000-4,000 words, and the deadline for both is 24th August 2025). Flash Fiction Online
This magazine publishes literary and speculative flash fiction. They are currently open for unthemed flash fiction (they will cap submissions for these when they reach their quota), and also for regret-themed submissions (there will be no cap for themed submissions).

Brink
They accept fiction, nonfiction, poetry, hybrid works, translations, as well as video essays and cinepoetry. They want submissions on the obsession theme, for this reading period. “We accept a variety of creative work from every genre and work that resists any genre. We are most interested in work that presses creative boundaries, uses more than one medium to tell a story, and both looks and feels different on the page. Additionally, we look for submissions that engage the theme of each issue alongside the idea of being on the brink.”

Escape Pod: PodCastle
This fantasy audio and online magazine publishes fantasy fiction of all kinds. They also accept translations and reprints.

Mysterion
They want science fiction, fantasy and horror stories that engage meaningfully with Christian themes, characters or cosmology. The stories need not teach a moral, or be close to an approved theological position, or be pro-Christian. They are especially interested in stories that show Christians from cultures beyond those of the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. They also accept translations and reprints. They have two annual reading periods for fiction, January and July. Art is accepted through the year.
