5 Short Story Publishers that Pay $100+

This is a listing of 5 short story publishers currently calling for submissions. All of these publishers pay at least $120 for some of the writing they publish. They have various deadlines, some of which are coming up rather quickly.

1. Sniff & Barkens is a new magazine all about dogs. They’re currently calling for submissions. According to WritingCareer.com, the pay is $100 per story. They accept original writing no longer than 1,000 words. To learn more, read their submissions guidelines.

2. Story Houston is now accepting submissions for their Fall/Winter issue. They accept short stories and creative non-fiction up to 5,000 words in length. They pay $200 per published stories. They were “founded to encourage and support developing writers in the Houston area and beyond.” They seek to publish writing that appeals to a broad audience – “anyone who loves a good story.” Here are their submission guidelines.

3. How to Help is looking for creative non-fiction stories about “how people have meaningfully aided you as a cancer patient, and what you have found most valuable in terms of support.” They pay $150 per selected essay, and one copy of the book. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

4. Daily Science Fiction publishes one science fiction story every single day. They pay $0.08 cents a word, up to 1,500 words. Although, they prefer shorter stories, especially flash fiction, for “financial reasons,” as well as because it matches the preferences of their readership. One story a day is certainly a lot of publishing, and that can get expensive for an indie publication. It can also be a lot of reading for their readers. 5. Mothership Zeta is open for submissions until July 25th. They are looking for “science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories that are fun. The robot who fights a dinosaur, not the robot who explores its lack of humanity and deactivates itself. ” They pay $.06 cents a word for original fiction.
